PVP participation feels low

I lost interest in WoW PvP after Legion when I took my first long break from the game and really invested my time into other MMOs. Because of that… well, WoW PvP just feels bad and not fun most of the time now. I simply prefer the combat and power/gear systems of other MMOs more when it comes to PvPing after branching out properly.

I do think it not being so gear based would help a bit, but I really don’t think PvP could ever be my focus in this game like it was back in the day when I didn’t know any better. And I feel like this probably applies to a lot of MMO players, especially ones that have not played WoW practically their entire life and other MMOs seriously.

PvP retail scene barely even exists. If you like PvP you should go to Classic. It’s just as much as a joke if not more, but people like playing it so.

I could swear Blizzard removed pvp in 2008 or something.

Gotta laugh at the irony, someone once told me to go back to PVE because my “damage” was less than the FCs. Because damage is what is important in capture the flag when your team leaves you the sole person guarding your own flag and getting mowed down by the half of the opposing team they didn’t even stop in the middle at any point right??

i used to like pug BGs. I was a pretty good healer and enjoyed being able to make a clutch heal in warsong gultch or be able to keep the team up defending a node in arathi basin or a tower in alterac valley.

but between addons targeting healers, every melee class have stun locks, and pre-mades vs pugs, it just isn’t fun and hasn’t been for a very long time.

I sometimes hop in on my BM hunter or arcane mage, but I haven’t at all in s2.

the early classic reboot pvp was fun. back to epic alterac valley battles with summoning NPCs and ice giants. even in classic, though, it eventually became the zergfest that most pvp is nowadays. “let’s get this over so we get our honor and get our gear”. there is little interest in playing the game.

Tbh pvp is so bad rn because you can either do it super casually (non-rated only) or super sweaty (rated) and there’s not much in between. Blitz & solo shuffle do help with that, so that’s good. But it feels like too often that you end up against players that are way higher rating than you.

This obviously happens because there’s not enough casual rated players so they end up having to put you up against higher rated ppl to cut down on queue times, but that ends up just making more casual players/newbies quit, thus exacerbating the issue.

There’s no real experience of “hey I’m still kinda new to rated stuff and I wanna dip my toe in for a bit of a challenge and slowly work my way up in difficulty.” It’s just “get ground into dust again and again and again until hopefully you improve enough to stand a chance against the sweats.” So the amount of new PvPers is very low, which isn’t good for long term sustainability of the PvP community as a whole.

Bottom line, there’s not enough casual folks playing in the lower ranks. Feels like there needs to be some MMR tuning/better rewards for casual rated PvP participation, but I’m no expert, so I don’t know what that’d look like. All I know is, rated stuff feels really bad when you’re getting started, and that deters a lot of players, meaning when you naturally lose older players over time, you’re not gaining enough new ones to replace them.

Many people are like me. Dont care to have a seperate set of armor for PVP. When I join PVP on anything but battlefields I get matched with people way better than me and just die anyway. After a few tries I go back to other content. Maybe if I played PVP enough I would get good at it, but it really sucks to play, get killed, and in the process let the rest of the team down since they will probably lose if you die too quick.
