PvP beginner question

Recently hitting 60 I’ve started trying to play in random battlegrounds a bit more. So far it’s a nice break from fetch questing, some of the opposing players have very impressive tactics that keep it fun. The question I have is how do we get to a point where we are competitive in PvP and not just the fodder trying to hold an objective? There seem to be, more often than not, times were just two incoming fireballs, or one hunter combo kills me about as fast as I’m able to turn and face the opponent. Do we just keep at the battlegrounds and earn gear little by little through a PvP grind? Or is there a way to step down to more equally geared opponents?

It’s hard to say.

In your case you probably need to learn the BG and how the other classes operate specifically to their CD both offensive and defensive.

You will be “ok” doing bgs to gear but it’s long and you will never be competitive with arena geared players except in certain scenarios. (Generally, they are bad and you are not.)

The gearing system currently impedes exactly what your fun will be like somewhat because of that.

Just try to learn your class really well and you can surprise even some geared well but don’t expect it to be fun.

Other options could be party synching down or actually gearing through rated PvP. (Though that wouldn’t be fun probably for someone like you based on the details you provided.)

I’ll take you up on that advice. I’m going to see what I can find checking over youtube at first, learning BG rules, and most importantly some of the things to watch out for from other players. I’ve already seen first hand I’m going to have to be more attentive to mages just out of range warming up a fireball, usually a second one hits right after. I’m sure there’ll be more to learn, especially important as that seems like it’ll be my only advantage to superior gear for a while

you can run some korthia. Ion said theres a 1% power increase for each level so if you are facing a 250 player they are 100% more powerful than you are. it sucks maybe next expac they will fix it

%100 more powerful feels about like that currently. I get some really nice shots off, even a few crits and it barely seems to touch some of the enemy. Once they get awareness of me, I’ll hit my defensive, disengage, and try to run and put distance between us but usually it’s just two, maybe three shots and I’m down. No really much time to get that distance. It’s sound like I will just have to practice tactically and try not to get caught in open 1v1 scenarios until I get a little more savvy with the abilities that can be used against me, and get the gear levelled up a bit. Right now I’m just walking with whatever I’ve gotten for quest drops, and pickups here and there from rares.

Save your honor for Tuesday! Start fresh imo.
In the meantime, as a Hunter you have the distance advantage.
Work on your positioning/spacing as this will matter, geared or not.
Right now it will be imperative to stay alive, stay away, stay in the game.

This meta is very bursty (fast), don’t let that shake you.
Happens at all skill/gear levels.

*Swap out that Adapt trinket for a Medallion when you get a chance.

Also make sure you check the health bars of the fellers you are fighting although at 149 (I checked your armory) you will be beating almost no one, but at least you will have an idea of what you are fighting.

I would advise as others have suggested, wait for the patch since a lot of the current content will become redundant so just wait and start from there. You will still be behind, but at least you can start buying/earning the upgraded 9.2 stuff versus the old things.

That’s at least one positive for you is that you came in at a good time to “start” gearing a toon, or at the very least, a “better” time.

At this point in the patch most people are fully geared with +34% vers , I have 37% base 40% with mad dukes tea !

you will notice a difference in damage and survivability once you start getting more pvp gear and your vers levels rise

tip for pvp is stack vers the more the better , hope this explains it for you !

Right now the current meta is actually to grind low cr games in 2v2 for conquest and just buy the conquest set since it is the same level unupgraded as fully upgraded honor gear is for arguably less effort. Because honor gear is actually garbage. It will not help you at all.

Get up to 1400 or 1600 eventually and you’ll have enough gear to hold your own. But not before you grind an inordinate amount of honor in order to upgrade the set. The getting destroyed in half a second doesn’t stop, you just gain the ability to do it back to other people.

Also, make sure that you have your legendary power(s). They’re so incredibly powerful that you really need them. So make sure you get the gold and resources for that, that’ll require doing some torghast and your weekly callings, saving up the gold you get from those. Also make sure that you have your covenant leveled up all the way, and make sure you get all your conduits. Ideally you want them to be leveled up as high as possible but you’ll probably honestly just be able to make do with the ilvl 200 ones you get from the broker vendor near the fp in oribos, and the 226 upgrade versions of those you get from grinding Korthia treasures.

So, once you’ve done all that, then you can start PVPing and having fun.

Just queue down like 99% of Ally players so you get put on the same team as 3 crusader exploiting warriors and 1-2 xp off exploiters. Can’t lose when you have cheaters on your team

First things first, you need to set up keybinds and turn with your mouse if youre not already.

Second, you need to learn the basics of PvP.

Then you need to get your conquest gear leveled up through rated matches.

If you are seriously interested in getting better I wouldnt mind helping you out if you have any questions. You can add my Btag- Kanstil#1725

I have a suggestion and welcome feedback and criticism.

Who is cheating?

WELL, this character, at low levels, with bad gear, last night was stomped along with my team mates in three BGs then we totally stomped in the next two…
We were totally, text book farmed… like I have not ever seen before, then we crushed the other team the same way…
It was really weird…

Ouch !!! that hurts…

Sounds about right. The “random” in random battlegrounds really just refers to the maps. But yet they really are random in every sense of the word…

OP, running keys is actually a great way to learn your rotation and all your utility. When you feel like you’ve mastered your rotation, try some arena. In arena you’ll learn fast, how fast things move and eventually get to the point where you understand how valuable each and every global is.
In keys, you’ll begin to appreciate how valuable your healer is. There will be plenty of times where you’ll have to peel a mob off your healer, or learn your own utility to stay alive after your healers died on the boss etc.
You’ll learn all this in bgs too, but you’re learning everything all at once with a lot of room for mistakes, whereas arena and keys, you’ll learn faster from your mistakes
