The OP is mainly talking about spam purging all game rather than purge itself.
E.g. With his suggestion, you could still spam purge if you do it at a good time - such as a kill window or cc chain. Hence, you could still outplay someone by spamming purge with exponential mana cost for consecutive spams within 5 seconds. And if done at a bad time, you get punished by the lost mana which is fair.
However, spam purging constantly and randomly should not get rewarded. As was already said; most dps purgers aren’t the main offender as there is a strict resource limit. And many classes without substantial dot damage (mages) do sacrifice their damage when they spam purge which is fair. However, hot healers/dps with no-drawback purging needs to be addressed.
Purge spam is stupid and should be looked at. Any time the strategy is, “Just spam; itll work out” there is a problem.
They had this problem awhile back in one of these expansions and ended up putting a cooldown on it for awhile if I remember. I dont think it should be that drastic again, but its feeling an awful lot like that situation again.
In no world should you out efficiency say, a Restodruid, by spamming purge. I mean the math doesnt add up. Every single heal I got costs more than Purge. It doesnt even make sense. Why is purge cheaper than my HoTs?
Yes, I’m speaking from an Rdruid point of view, but there are other issues. Purge should be something you use sparingly going for kills or to clean off very important buffs. Not something you just spam. It should be at the very least, expensive mana-wise. If your gonna spam purge someone, it needs to have a drawback. You oom yourself doing it going for a kill, for example.
It’s the trade-off of being able to heal while out of LoS or in a CC via HoTs. Same way dot specs can dps even if the target moves out of their line of sight. In exchange you’re vulnerable to dispels
Thoughtsteal cripples resto druids far more than dispels
For dps you will go oom spamming it. For shadow you’re also trading offheals and shields for dispels, so you’re losing out on damage mitigation as well.
What if purge worked like defensive dispels and just cleared everything but triggered a short CD? Nobody seems to think defensive dispels are OP, it could be a potential solution
Yet, no one makes any conscious decision on whether they should purge or not; they just spam it. It apparently doesnt make a difference about a DPS going OOM if the strategy every single time is to spam purge no matter what.
You can try to list cons all day; but if the decision is to always 100% choose door number 1, purge, there doesnt seem to be enough drawbacks.
Theres no decision being made right now in relation to purge. Its, “oh something is purgeable, spam it” and shows theres a clear issue there. Again, they had this issue awhile back and added like a 10 second cooldown to shamans/fel hunters/etc. It got to the point where you just spammed it as buffs appeared, and its getting pretty close to that now.
I dunno, I feel like its a bit oppressive and it should have some sort of conscious decision attached to using it like anything else in the game, and that decision shouldnt boil down to “Is it glowing? Purge it.” And thats basically the decision tree going on right now. I mean anytime I face a shaman all I hear is “Whann Whaan Whaan Whaananana” Lol.
I would disagree, against shields purge is effectively doing the who shield in one gcd, and for a hot removing that heal which again is effectively doing the same as damage.
Yes they need to do this for Shadow priest , mages are fine given 5 spell steals and they are oom and cant even use key abilities , … the game is completely infuriating to play enough to reroll or just uninstall when EX. in a BG have a shammy running in a group and purge spam certain classes 50 times in a row even with them being wipe clean to continue to purge and never waste a gcd other to purge. it so fun to be on the receiving end of it. Should be as simple as your purge spam you go oom and should be able to be punished for it. the game should not have 0 counter play in any match up if i wanted to go play rock paper scissor I would go find someone to play that with instead advantages and disadvantages are expected.
Why not have purge be a channeled spell with a cooldown? While it channels, every tick removes a spell. Have it tick like 6 times over 3 seconds (interval of 0.5 seconds decreased by haste.). Make the cooldown like 15 seconds?
This makes it interruptible, but also will remove a mage’s combustion if it’s not interrupted. Could add some actual skill to using it and countering it.
