It depends on the quest level. Grey will never reward exp, but green quests will only start to diminish if you’re 6+ levels higher than the quest.
I don’t play beta or know any of the zone levels, but assuming it works like classic, if you’re 59 you will get full credit for every quest that’s above 53, even if it’s green.
So assuming they didn’t change something since vanilla, you’re right. Experience can diminish after 5 levels.
I’m fairly sure that the questing and zone system is designed so that you can’t do that. There will be enough quests in a particular zone to get to a certain level and once you hit that level the quests with go down towards grey in what you can get from doing them. And since you have to do all the zones, that would seem a logical pattern.
It’s definitely not the same as classic /vanilla.
Grey quests give XP. But 500-600 XP at 59 isn’t worth the time, you get more XP from a mining node.
This is a wholly different system.
From what I could tell, every quest has a static level during the ‘on rails’ experience.
How much XP you get for a given quest is a function of the quests level and yours. You get max XP when you are the same level, but as your level gets higher in relation to that quest, it will reward less total XP.
That change, along with each point of XP being worth a smaller percentage of a level every time you level up, adds an element of diminishing returns to doing every single quest.
In other words, its like questing was prior to the changes over the last couple of expansions, where you would outlevel quests in a zone.
So level like normal the first time around
I guess, if you want to call something removed 4-6 years ago ‘normal’.
What I’d call ‘normal’ is how everything else in the world works, outside of one aberrant situation.
Unless a level 50 is grouped with a leveler via party sync
I would recommend my fellow players to be very thorough on their mains. Do every quest you see as soon as possible. Then on alts players can afford to be more picky.
Ayyy that was cool of you to write up this PSA and answer specifc questions.
Ty OP
So nothing has really changed. It’s always been like this for current content, especially when it launches. You made it sound like even if you did EVERYTHING you’d still have to kill boars to level, a la Classic. Obviously this isn’t true. Good to know.
GREAT post, thank you for taking the time. Do you know anything about how the character boost will apply to all this? I picked up the boost with the prepay but not sure yet what character to apply it to.
46 hours to launch, and I fear there are those who still haven’t heard this message.
I don’t want anyone to get stuck like I did.
Last chance to warn people!
Yeah I quickly realized that myself. And having BIS level 50 gear from every expac and just cycling through CT for gankin…
I still don’t like the teleport but I think they should say 1-49. And as much fun as it was making a level 49 and teyin to BIS her… I was apparently the only one who did. Which was fine.
If they just stated clearly it was 1-49 I think that would be fine. Even have Chromie pop up at 49 sayin “How your power has grown! When you grow again I will bring you back to the current timeline because we will need you!”
I was wondering and may play an alt (lvl 50 already) and do BFA quests (i leved by using WQ only) and get the cloak before i hit shadowland and see if I can get to say get to lvl 52 before jumping into showdownlands? could that help.
Leveling comes pretty quick in SL, faster im sure than doing the cloak.
On this real run thru I did 5-6 side quests in bastion, and then 8-10 in Ardenweld and hit 60 while killing mobs on the last quest before the 60 block.
I have the opposite issue, I’m doing all the quests but now I’m in maldraxxus and they are all green, and I cannot progress until i finish these…
Thank you! I was on my second time through bastion so was only doing the story line only for them to just end with no explanation…very frustrating.
Thats whay i tried to time it out so I hit 60 just before I had to. have a friend who did everything they could find in the first 3 zones, ended up 60 before finishing ardenweald story. They were surprised they could not just go to bastion and pick a covenant but instead still had to finish everything before getting to choose.
