I almost always exclusively level with 0 professions until end game.
Actually you dont NEED engineering and if your not using 2 gathering professions on your main and using lvl30 alts for tradeskills YOUR doing it wrong. Now i can see once you hit 60 dropping one gathering prof for engineering but its not needed just helpfull.

I’m pretty sure that was the entire point and idea behind engineering. You get all the cool stuff but only you can use it. That in itself is where the balance lies.

No… this is a “you” problem.
You may have better luck with your professions of choice in Retail, however.

I don’t know where everyone got this idea that everything has to be perfectly balanced at all times. Different professions have different tradeoffs and strengths in different settings. Engineering is good in hardcore because dummies are an escape mechanism. It’s fine.
It’s still kind of unnecessary, especially with trading allowed in official. Just pickpocket potions and blinding powder. But I still do it, and pretty much every character I play is alch/herb. I may do skin/LW because on a hunter though just for something different.
Maybe at some point I’ll do an engineer as well for the same reason, but I’ve always appreciated having a healthy stock of potions on hand ready to go.
