I’m waiting out an 8-day ban for name violations. I have toons, Some max-level, That are named after public figures and that is a bannable offense in classic wow. Is there a way to get these toons re-named or am I stuck with lv. 60 toons that I can’t play because they are named after a pop-star or politician from the 80’s?
Would like to stay on topic and if your comment is “It’s your fault for not reading TOS”, Please just don’t bother. I’ts my fault, I don’t care. Trying to figure out if there is a way to save my current toons while I wait out this 8-day ban for a name violation.
No it’s not. It says nothing of the sort in their naming policy.
If you received a suspension for a naming violation then the name of your character was either in some way offensive or a bunch of people reported you and Blizzard didn’t actually look into it.
If you’re dinged for a naming violation they just make you change the character’s name.
I was banned for “newtgingrich”. No special charachters. The e-mail I recieved EXPLICITLY said this was a violation. The MULTIPLE TICKETS I opened confirmed this was a violation.
It is objectively a violation. To the point that GM’s won’t respond to me anymore. It sucks but that’s it. It’s their sandbox lol.
Somewhere around the launch of Classic they started giving people suspensions for offensive names. I can’t verify this as fact, but I have seen plenty of posts on the forums about it so I tend to believe it.
The character name must be between 2-12 characters long.
Accented characters are supported.
Numbers and symbols are not supported.
Mixed capitals and spaces are not supported.
Naming
Names are subject to the same rules established above. Any name the player has the ability to customize—such as player names, BattleTags, and guild names—must be appropriate and inoffensive. Any name that violates our standards or disrupts the community will be changed, and additional limitations may be placed on the offending account per our discretion.
Take note that acceptable names are determined by player reports and Blizzard’s decision, and role-playing servers may have distinct standards for using game-appropriate names.
Are you on an RP server? Because then it would be a naming violation.
True. But naming your character after a celebrity is not an explicit violation of their naming policy. Then again, just as you’re getting at, their naming policy is so broad and generic that you could interpret it any way you want.
Yeah I mean it doesn’t matter at this point. I don’t have a problem with Blizz enforcing their insane naming policy. I just wish there was a way to proactively fix names if someone (everyone) doesn’t read the TOS and it’s updates.

That name is not in violation of the ToS in any way shape or form. That is not why your account is currently sanctioned for an 8 day ban. Even if you did have an egregiously offensive character name you wouldn’t get an 8 day ban unless you’re a repeat offender. Since we know the name is not why you were banned, why were you banned?
I’m not salty about the 8-day ban. I had enough questionable names over the last 15 years to get to the point where violations were 8-days at this point. It’s my fault.
