A dev a few years ago let slip that 75% of the income WOW makes, goes back into server maintenance. ATVI dies noit release this info as it is considered vital information . But estimates from those with experience say that ( in 2014 time frame) it cost Blizzard about 5 million a month PER server in maintenance . The costs doubtfully have gone down . WOW is not the big cash cow anymore people seem to think it is. This is why ATVI put their own CFO in charge and drastic cost cutting measures were put in place to reign in BLizzard reckless spending.
This year is going to be even worse. Its folly to think this ancient game is going to be kept running for a long time as its revenue has been dwindling. The Video game industry today is in chaos. All your the Big Developers and publishers are feeling it because in general they are all making really bad business decisions and games that should have been home run smash hits are crashing and burning with hundreds of millions of dollars in development money going up in smoke almost overnight.
I have to wonder if back then it was because TITAN was still a project and Blizzard thought Titan was going to be the game to Put WOW on the back burner for them. Then when Titan fell apart they were struggling to come up with Ideas for WOW
