Pondering on why The Jailer seems like a weak villain

His nipples make me uncomfortable

The Jailer follows too many of the typical villain tropes. Sure it’s still early but unless they do a 180, I will have a hard time to take the Jailer seriously as a threat and not as some comical nipple man.

I heard they can cut Saronite!

The best villain ever is Arthas. God I miss how great WOTLK was.

Shame I missed out on it, was trying to get a job at my young age when classic was out, then tbc, had bad luck with that so couldn’t play. Love the lich kings voice and it looks like they did a ‘villain’ properly… his voice alone felt menacing and his presence felt impactful when he did show up. Didn’t feel incompetent like the Jailer has so far.

I thought the Lich King basically gets all the dead people for his army.

But that is kinda the same thing as a jailor – but the jailor is stupid.

Unless I am just not following the Lore since SL has been hard to swallow.

Obviously Blizzard has the INTERN who is currently SOLELY responsible for CLASS BALANCING and LEGACY RAID SCALING write the story too.

That would be Danuser. He doesn’t really have great experience leading anything writing related.

Yup he’s really coming off as being inept.
It’s literally following the Azshara way of writing a boss.

Sylvanas lures everyone into Naz’jatar, I mean Shadowlands…
The Jailor doesn’t really bother to squish everyone, or break the oribos portal because he has some ‘greater plan’.
Said plan gets ruined and gets defeated…

Every time he shows up he’s just… there… unless the core he’s missing is the brunt of his power and he’s just super weak, he seems to really follow the same ol’ big bad mentality of under estimating the newcomers trying to defeat him.

Hades was/is hilarious though.

The Jailer is just… sad.

On a related note, before the story really got going and we realized we were going to Thros, I pitched a tier concept to some of my buds. Basically, Odyn decides to move the Halls of Valor into the Shadowlands and leads the assault on Helya. But things go wrong when the Jailer shows up in the Halls of Valor. The whole place is basically being laid siege to in a counter-attack by the Mawsworn, and the Jailer ends Odyn’s campaign by defeating him in one on one combat, dragging him down into unknown depths.

Nobody cares if the Jailer can beat up Thrall or Anduin. They get beat up every other expansion. But bring back a beloved character, a truly powerful character that fans love, and then have the Jailer lay the smackdown on him in a beautifully rendered CGI battle… that might drum up some interest for the character.

This is probably not happening at this point, but man, the concept I’ve envisioned in my head has so much potential.

The problem is the same as with BFA. The villain is too mysterious. We literally know nothing about him. We don’t know who he is, what he wants, why he is doing what he is doing. Given their track record in BFA where we never learned what Sylvanas was hoping to accomplish I’m not holding my breath.

You can only be “mysterious” for so long before it stops being interesting. If we ever learn what their deal is, it will probably be a let down.

The Jailer reminds me of Thanos, who, early on in the MCU, was the big bad pulling the strings behind the scenes.
Thanos ultimately made himself known to all and proved to be a formidable and interesting foe for the Avengers to fight off.
Perhaps Blizzard is slowly building up the character in this fashion as well, we will just have to be patient and wait & see.

Thus far, he’s rather one-note and fairly boring, hardly worth even talking about…

thanos…became an interesting villain? in what capacity? the dude gets absolute power of the universe and…throws a chunk of moon at someone who cheeses it and creates illusions and portals. wow.

they butchered thanos. so, i guess it’s a good comparison since the writers over here are bad too.

I strongly question whether Blizzard even has the chops to pull off a character like Thanos Part 1. More likely he’ll end up being like Thanos Part 2, twirling his mustache, nothing more than a “final boss” for the characters. Those two character couldn’t be more different basically.

Thanos has been pretty well received in his Infinity War incarnation.

That’s a good comparison EXCEPT what is missing is that Thanos was a side plot to every single one of those movies until infinity war/ endgame. The actual plot of each individual movie was driven by a villain with recognizable motives and goals. We don’t have that. We have a villain (the jailor) that is a complete mystery. We don’t have any clue what he is trying to achieve or why.

To be fair, we had no idea what Thanos was up to until Thor delivered a big speech about him out of nowhere in Avengers 2, which was really kind of ridiculous upon consideration.

What made Thanos work was that he got to be the protagonist of his own story, he was given a compelling back-story, and most importantly, he was cemented as a worthy villain by actually earning a victory through his strength of will.

I doubt Blizzard is going to do any of those things. We’ll probably learn that the other ancient ones or whatever they’re called wronged him, so he’s bitter and he’s going to destroy all the toys because he’s upset. It’s not even close to the same thing as Thanos.

My impression is that currently the Jailer is still stuck in the Maw. Yes, his army rivals the Burning Legion… but it’s not getting anywhere. Except for a few Forsworn who seem able to portal in and out… probably thanks to the same inherent Kyrian power the Ascended use to travel the realms and retrieve souls. Oh, and Kel’thuzad was able to summon a Behemoth into Maldraxxus, but it required an entire ritual to get just one.

I believe he will get out once we learn more of what he wants out of Anduin or what the Sepulcher’s purpose is, and that’ll be Blizzard’s cue to give us the expansion’s Invasion type content.

No. He has to raise the dead and mind control them. Interesting thing about when the Koch King kills someone or raises them, they always seem to be missing a bit of themselves. Sylvanas, Uther and the DKs are all great examples of this.

Still no. The Jailer gets them when theyre naughty. Except for right now of course but that’s the Hordes fault.

This.

Yes, but Thanos wasn’t the major villain in any of those movies. The main villain in those movies did have clear motivations.

The Brokers in Oribos talk about things and you can listen in and hear interesting things sometimes. Once, one of them started discussing something he’d heard about the Eternal Ones and his superior interrupted him to say that it doesn’t matter either way because all the Eternal Ones only care about one thing, the acquisition of souls, and “we can’t help them with that…yet” These Eternal Ones and the “Purpose” and all of it is a huge con. They’re cosmic leeches feeding off the energy of the dead. Their brother Zovaal is better at it than any of them it seems. So they all got jealous and found a way to rid themselves of him. They call each other brother and sister but no one sounds too upset to find out Denathrius has been defeated just angry. If I were betrayed by my sibling, I would be much more than angry but these things…they are all single minded in their “Purpose”. Grab all the souls they can.
