Playing WoW without Shadowlands

I have a friend that just started playing WoW and is liking it, but isn’t ready to drop money in Shadowlands. I hear that you can still go through the endgame grind of BfA, but I’m not sure if the grind has changed much since the release of Shadowlands.

My question is, is it still fun? I’m asking that question as if you’re a person who enjoyed BfA when it was current content (cause I know a lot of folks didn’t).

Will he hate himself for going through the old content, or is it worth while? I was thinking of locking a character at level 50 and joining him, or should I just go to 60 and one shot things?

Right now, level 60s aren’t really any more powerful than 50s in older content, so I’d lock a character at 50 with them. (That will also mean that you can still run stuff in the dungeon finder with them.)

There’s plenty to do in the older content that’s worthwhile today like unlocking allied races and BfA flying to keep your friend busy for a while. And of course, the visions still have a bunch of achievements and pets and stuff tied to them. (And that doesn’t even go into all of the Legion content with class halls and artifact collecting they can also do.)

I think the biggest problem you might run into is if you are doing a lot of end game content at 60, which makes them feel like they are missing out.

I joined him in a dungeon with my level 60 before and it synced me down to level 50 for the dungeon, so what do you mean by this?

And yeah that’s good to hear that there’s a lot of stuff to do. It seems he likes becoming more powerful over collecting things, and while the easiest way to get more powerful is to go into Shadowlands, is there still a power rise/grind to be done in BfA still?

Also what about PvP without Shadowlands? Does that still function? Both in War Mode and Arenas/BGs.

For someone completely new to the game, I don’t think they will hate themselves. And as the previous poster said, the way Blizz has done scaling, you don’t really have a huge power advantage by doing BFA content at 60. Actually, if you have a level 50 that’s decked out in decent BFA gear, you might even have an easier time with some things.

You cannot join an automatic dungeon queue for content that you have outleveled. A level 50 can queue for BFA dungeons and LFR. A level 51 can still do that content if they run to the dungeon and enter the old school way, but cannot queue for it.

Maybe it was because he was the one who queued for it that it allowed me to do it anyways? Cause I was chillin in shadowlands until it popped me into the dungeon instance.

Hey! I’m still in BfA, and I own shadowlands…

In my case, I’m in it for the lore. So going thru the BfA questline and warcamp was cool enough to not even think about shadowlands for awhile. And you have 3 races to unlock there.

But theres 3 main problems:

  1. if you are in there for the power, the thing you get to power up will be unusable in SL.

  2. Raid locked storylines: some story and quest progression is raid dependent. And most ppl is raiding in SL right know wich means you will have trouble finding a group (i had).
    Joing a guild might help…

  3. Some story is locked behind some kind of reputation system, like the one in Nazjatar. In this case you will have to grind a lot just to progress. I’ve abandoned Nazjatar because of that.

I’m a lore/role player. Dont care about power, dungeons and raids. I just want to play a story with friends and my perspective is limited to that.

He actually just bought Shadowlands lol, but that’s some good information, and as person who is a lore/roleplayer as well, I think I’ll follow in your footsteps with this as well! Thanks!
