I think what they need to do for future racial considerations is look at what we actually play–what we actually like.
Each race has its own devotees, for sure, but there are two races that are clear winners of the popularity contest in a broad way across the entire game: Humans and Thalassian Elves.
These races are popular because in an RPG, most players project themselves–to some degree–into the character. Human and Blood Elf are the closest to “RL Human Ideal” in the game, and that’s why people play them more often than other races.
The introduction of more varied skin tones (long overdue) will, I believe, increase the “lead” these two races have over all the others.
The improvement and added variety of faces and racially-diverse feature options will also increase the lead.
People like putting themselves into their fantasy worlds for gameplay, and I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure the Stormwind human and Thalassian models will remain the far-and-away numerical winners.
We don’t need more animals. We need more customization options for the races we already have, and that’s why I’m so excited about SL.
Please no. Cat races managed to keep me away from trying FF14 for many many years. Seriously. As I am a long time FF fan. How can a race detour someone from trying out a game so much? Well that was it for me.
Now with the addition of Viera in the new expansion I thought that was pretty cute. As they were actual apart of the FF series.
Also I thought they were the best part of FF12 aside from the cool marketplace cinematic near the intro of the game. Now a lot would be like oh it’s cause they be bunnies, it’s like nah bud you had to go through a forest maze just to see where these bunnies were hiding. Also I felt there were the most like an Elven race in the whole FF series. Secluded, secretive and feisty. Too bad that they gave them such a limited option in customization.
I heard the expansion was really good. Unfortunately I made the decision to not play it at launch and still haven’t checked it out. I probably will not for a while. I heard it’s very good tho. I remember the launch coming around rise of Azshara, I didn’t get to play either of them at launch but ultimately came back to see a long time anticipated character (for me) first in WoW and I was happy with the results.
Leave the cat people out of every game.
Edit: I still haven’t gotten around to the FF7 remake and I managed to find a physical copy during Covid times a couple weeks back. Which that was not happening the first couple of weeks of release. I hope the remake is as good as the original.
