You can still buy some good stuff with Shiny Pet Charms, i bought a shiny pet mirror for 500 charms 
I bought that in Legion. 
I have literally 4000 shiny pet charms that I was sitting on to upgrade pets to rare quality (or spend on level stones).
Wow that sucks, too bad we cannot exchange them even at a rate of say 10 shiny charms for 1 polished charm. I have over 25,000 Timeless coins that are pretty much useless now, i learned from that experience.

If you want to take it to the next level, use narcissa’s mirror on a cat pet, then sit on the ground so it jumps on your lap.
