I just go for names or titles because I don’t care too much for the “Xxxbenafflockhahai’mfunnyhapleasekillmexxX” names.

For some, but not all, it’s the same reason players of D&D might be all their characters “Bob the class name”. They’re embarrassed and want to distance themselves.
I would like to pretend I haven’t taken forever to name a character. My vulpera and my death knight were the worst, however. Being on a large server means everything with any meaning, no matter how obscure, is already taken. Honestly, that’s half the reason people use “stupid” names (air quotes there) – because there’s nothing else to use.
Personally, I see this as a flaw with the naming reservations. I really think they reserve names for FAR too long for people who are no longer playing. It’s something like four years and the names remain reserved if you log in to anything on the account, even for characters that have been completely abandoned for half of ever. It needs to be shorter than that and the characters need to be active, IMO. For example, I think two years of not logging in to a character should flag it’s name as available. Or maybe have the rule be two years of no account activity frees up the names and three years of not logging in to a character on an active account frees up it’s name. I really think changing how long names are reserved would do a lot to stop the “stupid” names.

Hmmm. This thread rings something familiar of a certain RP Elite Pandaren Poster who actively made posts on Reporting Names. While also sneaking in suggestions to have RL players of Vulpera and Gnomes wear purple triangles and other sorts.
