Maybe this will help clear things up:
Never introduce flying > Ground mounting for fun > flying for quests > ground mounting quests
Edit* this is all my opinion of course

Ok.
I prefer Pathfinder. 12+ toons at 5k told each = 60k
That’s two Krag’wa mounts.
Flying has been in the game for 12 years. It was introduced in the first expansion and was very much loved by the vast majority of players. Blizzard even used it as a selling feature for wrath. There is no reason to time gate it because when it’s available you STILL have a choice to use a ground mount.
I think he reason people are ok with no flying is new contents (quests, WQs, travel, etc.) aren’t designed around flying like pre-WoD - arguably more popular, enjoyable contents.
Personally, I’m fine with pathfinder, but I wouldn’t mind paying for flight like pre-WoD. I’m always for options.
Edit: Erm, I misunderstood your point. Anyway…
Yeah, keeping Pathfinder in old xpacs is strange and silly. Once the new xpac comes out, or at latest the x.1 release of the current xpac, flying from old xpacs should be available for gold at that xpac’s max level.
Then, change the “old” Pathfinder rewards to something cosmetic. Those that previously completed it get it in the mail, and new people that want to complete it just for the experience still get an interesting reward at the end.
I think we’re starting to get off topic. I was there when they were introduced and I really loved them too. I was so excited to start flying. Looking back tho I just feel like it wasn’t a good idea because it changes a lot of how they have to handle future level design. Idk, I just like the grounded feeling of vanilla.
But nvm what I think about flying over let’s get back to the topic…
What are you saying about time gating it?
I’m saying there’s no logical reason for flying to be time gated for half the expansion. First because I’ll say it for the millionth time…you always have a choice to use a ground mount. Second because you know in 8.3 they’ll release an area where you can’t fly so the people that enjoy flying don’t even really get half an expansion to enjoy their preferred playstyle.
Oh ok. Yeah I don’t like time gating either, unless it makes sense I guess. I liked how wrath sorta did it with locking it off until higher levels. given the choice I’d prefer to buy it right away or atleast have the entire achieve available at the start
Edit* _I still wish flying was never introduced tho
_
Wrath allowed us to fly at 77. It was great. No time gating. Just available to all at level 77.
I disagree with your opinion on flying being introduced.
Edit - I think flying is one of the best things to ever happen to wow.
I think if flying was still purchased with gold, a lot of people would be complaining that those willing to buy tokens could unlock it before everyone else. Pathfinder on the other hand is the same grind for everyone.
I like the Loremaster part of pathfinder; it pushed me to do quests I wouldn’t have done otherwise and I discovered stories/zones I really enjoy. The rep grind is a little tedious… But the part I really don’t care for is all the waiting. Like, we really should have part 2 by now for BFA. I think most people completed part one ages ago by now; hell, I’m levelling my 7th alt through BFA content by now, still with no flying…
All of what you say is true about the gold, though I never had any issue at all paying for even max speed flight for all of my alts, even though I’m not a huge AH player. Questing provided enough gold, really. It was still a lot of gold to pay for a player with a lot of alts.
I have no problem with Pathfinder Part 1. It’s the time gating for Part 2 that rankles, and that’s my line in the sand. I don’t have a sub right now, because I’ve completed Part 1 and Part 2 isn’t available. I refuse to level any alts in current content—something I always do many times every xpac—until they can fly. Part 1 is enough, and should award flying at the beginning of the xpac, as soon as you complete the achievement.
I feel like Part 2 is Blizzard devs being spiteful because of the uproar that took place when they tried to remove flying completely.
They need to leave PF as it is for those who like to play that way…and they need to give back max level and gold for those of us who dont like rep grinds and all the questing, but prefer farming, dungeons and pet battles to level with.
Well…that or just watch as a huge number of players continue to become disenfranchised and move over to other games.
Either way …
The entire pathfinder concept is a childish fit of rage to punish players who dared to defy them on flight.
This game has enough grinds. It didnt NEED another grind for a stinking mode of travel.
and they need to wonder why people are quitting?
It is not a case of either or. There are an endless number of alternatives. They could just give flight free at max level. There could be different ways to unlock account level flying.
Their intent is apparently to drag out content as long as possible. They’ve decided that since this is a subscription game, we are supposed to be “consuming content” at a certain pace. Their aim is to hold off flying as long as possible as a way to slow people down. I think you can expect Pathfinder to be dragged out longer and longer with each new release.
I was amazed that people put up with Pathfinder II being put off as long as it was in Legion. It will probably be put off just as long if not longer in BFA, and people are basically putting up with it again. You can expect Pathfinder Part II to be put off even longer in the next release. They are trying to “wean” everybody off flying for good.
I farmed soooo many motes to combine into primals to sell on the AH back then… never was good at playing the AH, so that was the most reliable/straightforward way I found to farm gold. The addition of daily areas in later patches improved things but there was never a point where piling up gold was particularly easy.
To put it another way, sometimes practicality outweighs whatever reservations one has about something. In this case, the general feeling is that flight negatively impacted the game as a whole in major ways, but the advantages of using it are strong enough that it’s difficult to justify not using it if it’s available.
These are not incompatible feelings. A close real life equivalent might be found in the morning commute: even though practicality dictates that you drive to work, you may still feel bad about the increase in traffic and pollution brought by doing so.
Considering every expansion you could earn enough gold leveling to buy flight I would rather have that. Pathfinder would be fine if you coudl fly with part 1 completed. At this point its just being withheld over spite. Ion and friends hate that we get it at all but considering the mass exodus they had when they announced flight was being removed in WOD they were forced to come up with something. So now they withhold it as long as possible and use it to pad there played time metrics.
They have it set up so if you don’t do pathfinder they can report people don’t want flight and just remove it. When everyone begrudgingly does PAthfinder they can report its a success people love it.
Anything other than a forced wall, please! I don’t even mind small timegates such as rep/quest/money grinds that much, as long as the content is available upon completion. I don’t mind playing and putting in time for a proper reward, be it through money or quests… Right now, however, we have a forced invisible wall of a timegate until a patch comes through and gives you the “OK” to move on. I’ve been max rep and have essentially had Pathfinder 1 on my main for 5 or 6 months now… Ridiculous!
I think a LOT more people would be cool with pathfinder if the first one unlocked flight. The second one unlocking it is almost entirely arbitrary. The rep grinds in the first is enough of a time gate to let people finish leveling and such without everyone flying around them. Part 2 should just unlock it for the new patch zones.
