I’ve read the website announcement that development on CrossRP was stopped indefinitely. I hope that decision can be reversed. I enjoyed using the application for RP with Alliance players.
FUN DETECTED. TERMINATE.
Are you surprised anymore? I mean, anyone who has been watching Blizzard knows that they despise creativity and fun in their games.
After all, if you’re RPing, you’re not giving them metrics for their M+ <large air quote>esport</large air quote> content. They don’t make this game for you to have fun in, they make this game to desperately try and recapture the glory days of when they had a meaningful esport in Brood War.
Something to note about this is that even if something is “way out of the way” of original intent, those things still need to be taken seriously during design and development, as there are malicious users that will take advantage of exploitable behavior (especially if it’s easy to do so, or if the software is very popular). Though as of now, there hasn’t been an issue in that regard.
I’m inclined to believe that the changes to the community API aren’t quite targeted at Cross RP, but more so in favor of a different issue, preventing truly malicious software to be developed. My guess is in the OP, an absolute guess, but if the text is protected, it’s usually simply in favor of player privacy. For example, another thing that addons are blocked from reading is players’ real life names.
This is purely for discussion food; I don’t agree with the change if it was for privacy concerns, as someone truly malicious would just hack the WoW client and read the data anyways.
… You rang?
I want to drop a comment here to express my support for your addon. It really added so much to roleplaying, and I am absolutely disappointed Blizzard would break something as wonderful and immersive to the roleplay experience like this addon.
I agree with this 100%. All that you are saying that they ‘have to do’ to harrass people contains a ton more steps than the people you are talking about would be willing to do. If someone really wanted to, reallly really wanted to harrass another person, just going over and making a character on the oppositing faction and harrassing them would be like 1000 times easier to do and you could even do it on a grand scale as well. Like so many other people said, you don’t have to go through this many steps to do so and in the end, it would result in the same thing. You getting blocked from contacting them.
More to the point, people have done just that, quite often, in WoW’s history. As opposed to this addon-based, community-based line of attack, which remains entirely hypothetical. (Because it’s more work, and it requires your victim to help set it up… outside of pro wrestling, that’s not something you can rely on.)
blizzard always finds some way to spill the milk at the most random interval, like come on people
I wholeheartedly support the work put into this addon and everything that it has done for the RP community. The most amazing RP I’ve ever experienced, the Tournament of Ages, was made into what it was by the Cross RP addon. In fact, Cross RP has also helped us engage ourselves in the story of BFA. It’s helped facilitate our experiences with the Horde vs Alliance story that is currently being told. This is an extremely valuable addon and I hope it can continue to operate.
I just want to say how encouraging it is that out of hundreds of RPers posting here, only one actively dislikes the addon.
I don’t think Domina is trolling. She’s got her opinion and she’s entitled to it. But if this thread was a democracy, we’d have a pretty clear result:
Cross RP is loved dearly by most roleplayers! Let’s hope it comes back soon
I first off want to thank you sincerely for making this addon… One that I was not able to fully use yet… One that I had hopes of being able to at some point…
I have had it on in some cases and was never able to say anything to opposite faction in a PvP case… This was simply a tool for us to expand out our friendships with other people… Which is that not the basis of an MMO? Bringing a community together?
It really has begun to feel (and I am saying this as a long time Blizzard supporter and fan boy) that you have now pushed your player base and fan base away from you all… From the many things here and there that were promised over the years and also the general disconnect you have with informing us players… So how about instead you really start working on your connection to your players like you used to.
Everyone disliked Ghostcrawler but he was on the forums all the time… Stop making us feel that you all stopped caring… Because that is the impression we are getting… All this too by breaking a simple add on that did nothing but allowed us to connect and grow a part of the community with in your game.
Sorry if it seemed like I was yelling at the OP but I just had to rant to Blizzard… This is terrible and I doubt they are going to listen to the 1% of us that are RPers… Though I think we should make a petition and maybe… JUST maybe they will listen.
I am voicing my support here as well. ToA was a smashing success because of this addon, and my guilds have integrated CrossRP into our RP in ways that have improved our experience for the better. Going back to bnet whispers or just using the communities tab is simply inefficient and doesn’t allow the use of great features such as viewing of opposite-faction RP profiles. We need this addon back.
So let me get this right
It let you talk to horde if you were alliance and vice versa?
Glad it got banned if that’s that case you made your choice of which set you wanted to roll with and your story telling be damned
You should only be communicating with /spit
And even then, it’s on the basis of “they banned similar addons in the past.” Which they did, but the TOS changed at the start of B4A.
The language forbidding cross-faction communication workarounds was removed (probably because communities-- a core feature of the patch-- would have been explicitly forbidden under the old TOS.)
This means that the old addons broke the TOS, but-- despite serving a similar purpose-- Cross RP did not.
I used this addon pretty extensively when I first heard about it a few months ago. While I can acknowledge the legal grey area about not doing cross-faction communication, I also feel that perhaps that should be revised. I also understand that technically Communities were not meant for addon data to be sent. I’m hoping that Blizzard are capable of coming up with a solution for that which isn’t just outright blocking it.
There are very valid arguments for and against this to be essentially re-implemented, however I can say I certainly didn’t see this tool abused when I was around. I can imagine there were a few cases, but these same people are going to find other ways anyway, and many of these players treat others of the same faction as such, too.
Addon data being cross faction also made this very useful, I should mention - not just simply being able to speak cross faction (there are a few methods already, like Thalassian with Void / Blood Elves, Pandaren, and so forth.) Having profiles can be pretty crucial to communication, as it allows players to expand upon details which otherwise can’t be expressed simply with /say.
Additionally, addon data being transferred cross-server is also very helpful. I personally enjoy having many of my Alliance characters on Wyrmrest Accord while I planned to have my Horde characters on Moon Guard, but I don’t really know if it’s worth levelling the Horde side anymore if I can’t speak cross server and cross faction without severe detriment to roleplay.
That being said, I bring my full support and hope there is a solution that allows for cross-faction roleplay once more. It was something I was looking forward to getting into during this patch, and having found out that this was removed really hinders my willingness to want to log in again. I think I’ve been playing since around mid-Burning Crusade or so? I consider myself a fairly loyal subscriber to the game, as I don’t play much of anything else.
Are we imgur now?
I mean, you’re not wrong, but.
No its not bait if an add on gives a function that has had a system preventing that from happening for the entire span of the games life you could consider it an exploit
I’ve been roleplaying on WrA since wrath… and at no time during my experience being a roleplayer here have I had as much fun in this game as when this patch was in use. I downloaded it as soon as I heard about it, and loved every second of those roleplays! It was never used for in game advantages in pve or pvp content, and was strictly an RP addon for people who love the world and the races as well as lore… I am at a loss as to why it would be broken by blizzard, who is risking alienating probably their most loyal playerbase… even when the content was less than desired, even when the overall story took a turn that was annoying… we kept our subs going because we loved playing with the communities that we were apart of… why break something that expanded that community and made it even more enjoyable? This addon was a beautiful thing that made the game far more enjoyable and realistic for roleplayers, making it more immersive and exciting for a group of players that have always been here, paying to enjoy this world setting… please fix this and let us enjoy the game we so desperately love and have cherished since we began playing it, rather than punishing us for some unexplained reason.
Thank you for your time.
You could at least read the thread first.
