Paladin new spec...please read

Hello everyone, I’ve been following the game’s storyline lately.
And since we already have Shadow Priest, imagine if we had some corrupted paladin? Something like Chaotic Paladin, or Shadow Paladin, or even “Madden by the Light,” something focused on rage, and that corrupts the paladin.
No bubbles, or healing, but damage like an unholy Death Knight.
That would be cool, taking advantage of the momentum from Midnight.

Not sure I follow here.

Wdym “damage”?

Spec don’t do more or less damage based on their access to defensive and healing.

As far as idea goes, it’s been floated around on these forums and there are certainly in-game models referring exactly that idea.

That being said, if there was a time to bring up such a spec, it would have been midnight.
And it didn’t soo…

My bet would be on a support spec if they do add other specs.

I consider a spec too much to devote to a “void” themed paladin, and don’t like it. At best some kind of hero spec.

I do love the idea of an aug-like support spec.

Zealotory, that is what a spec like that ought to be named. DW dps paladin.

Death knights can heal themselves…

Also bubbles is a thematic skill that all paladins share.

Void knights ought to be their own class. If it don’t use the light and primarily melee, it ain’t a WoW paladin.

There won’t be anymore of those. Also it’s considered a dps spec now.

The biggest reason you’ll never see this (aside from Blizzard seldom doing more than 3 specs a class) is that ‘corrupted mystic knight’ is Death Knight’s class fantasy and Blizzard isn’t going to horn in on that or confuse the Paladin class identity. A corrupted Paladin doesn’t really feel like a Paladin anymore, it feels like a flavour of DK. Blizzard also try to steer away from having specs that duplicate the kit, fantasy, and feel of existing specs, and this is far too close to Unholy to really justify itself.

Little caveat to that.

Per some polls that leaked, Blizz is toying with the idea of new specs beyond 3 per classes.

For Death Knight, what they’ve polled people on was a Lich spec as a ranged Int based caster.

Now, DK are more oriented toward necrotic/death/frost magic, not necessarily the void.

The dichotomy already exist in priest so it’s not a completely foreign concept but it does feel a bit weird to lump it in under specifically “paladin”.

If the class had been named “Knight” or something like that and the sub-categories were paladin-esque then maybe you could have had a different type of knight but, as it is, I don’t see them really going there anymore.

And the thing that really nails the coffin, IMO, is that Demon Hunter got that Void spec, in Midnight, which was thematically appropriate.

I don’t see why they would go there for paladin if it wasn’t done for this expac.

On a plate class? Dumb idea. They should just make necromancers honestly.

That’s what unholy is now.

As far as the Lich goes, Arthas was the Lich King and was wearing plate…

Besides, Holy Paladin is a plate int based “caster”, a healer but still.

Also the Lich has a pretty good thematic fit with death knight already.

The only “problems” I see are overlaps in theme with frost dk and frost mage but, at the same time, I feel the Lich has elements that are distinct enough to not be an issue.

Additionally, they could repurpose its identity into a support as well instead of being simply a DPS (caster doesn’t have to mean DPS).
If they are gonna lean into more Augvoker specs ( BIG IF) as an official role and plan to introduce that with a new class in TLT (tinker/bard), they will need existing classes to bolster that role choices.
DK isn’t the first class I would’ve think of for it but they could make that work.

well yes, it would class as a DPS spec, but do a significant fraction of its damage via support, as Aug works.

And fighting in melee, your point is?

Congratulations OP, you described death knight.

I’d rather seen a supportive specialization that allows Paladins to be ranged and use bows. Maybe a DPS Spec or a support spec like Augmentation.

Priestess of the Moon, Delas Moonfang leading the way type Paladins.

The point is that they are flexible?

They aren’t bound to being melee.

Like, they literally just made a spec where a melee became loosely ranged in Devourer.

Why is it such a leap to think they could make a Lich spec for DK?

The theme of death knights is to be brutal, not flexible. They are juggarnauts.

Any class that wears plate should be melee. Otherwise what is the point of your character wearing plate.

I am meh on it, since we already had a ranged void user. Last I heard though is that you have a choice to be melee or ranged with it.

The leap is ranged plate.

Again, Holy paladin exist, it’s a plate and a caster.
They have a melee weapon and a shield and although proximity does play a role in the gameplay, it is by no means a requirement.

What you personally think of it is irrelevant, they made it and can do it again.

Shamans wears mail and have both a melee and range spec, your aversion is irrational.
They also wear shields at range…

Plenty of classes are already blending all the lines you say there are and have been for a long time.

There is no pre-established rule that prevent that from happening.
The fact they asked about it shows they don’t have such rules.
Because why ask at all if this was something they were prohibited to do?
It would be pointless work, that’s not the objective of a poll.

They asked about it, therefor they do envision it happening regardless of it being a plate class.

Rule of “cool” trumps all.

And turns out a “lich” spec, per the discussion on the poll, was pretty high in popularity.

Do with that what you will.

Edit:
And talk about speaking of the devil

I wouldn’t mind seeing a sort of “Oathbreaker” spec. It could sort of bridge the gap between Paladin and DK.

paladin thats a ranged caster.

I am not sure why some sort of corrupted paladin classes or fantasy is hanging around.

There’s no such thing as ‘‘corrupted’’ paladin, if the paladin is corrupted then he/she cease to be one. Just like there’s no Holy Death Knight or Holy Warlocks.

I think augmentation evokers stole that role from paladins. That pure support should have been baked into paladins.

One more reason why I hate evokers.
