Does anyone know of a way to go around Overwolf, legitimate or illegitimate, I don’t really care, I just don’t want to do addons manually and I sure as heck am not downloading their trash malware on my comp.
If they restrict their api? Nope. You can request devs post their addons on another site (wowinterface) and then go back to using that manager people posted earlier.
the only real way to block the ads would be through a dns ad block (pihole for example).
and I’m not inclined to use their software at all.
but, I am inclined to make a domain scraper to find what I need if it becomes too inconvenient to keep things updates otherwise.
LOL, the courts will not break the entire world wide web. The whole thing is based on hyperlinks to ressources. That’s all Wowup.io is doing. Linking to ressources.
I don’t think you understand how REST APIs work. It’s public. At best you can force an authentification token, but that only works if you control the entire chain. As soon as you distribute your authentification token, it can be taken and used in pretty much anything else.
All they have to do is build in a csrf token system between their launcher and the repo. Nothing says they have to allow you to DL content off their servers.
And since we have the token, we can just grab it and use it in another client. They have to distribute the token and lose all control over it once they do.
Can’t be a secret if you just share it around.
The API site itself needs to be on the public Internet.
Man seems like a greedy company that thinks we’re gonna put up with their crap to be able to use the add-ons we like. I hope they crash and burn, and it stays the way it is right no. Rather than having to deal with a flood of ads when you want to install add-ons.
Expect even a first year intern can design a system that randomizes the token value at intervals. Plus I think you might be crossing a line if you decompile their addon to locate the token address. Companies use this system all the time for this type of situation. To ensure a call from an external application is actually one of their one and allowed to make the call.
They are shutting that down apparently. Somewhere in November.
Which would require a client upgrade each time unless you’re “fetching” your token, in which case, anyone can fetch the token because that also probably uses a pre-shared secret that you know have access to. There’s no magic in IT. Your secrets stop being secrets the minute you massively distribute them in any form.
Look, I’m not going to debate this all night. You’re literally defending scumbags. Let’s just leave it there.
Well of course it’s going to be a fetch. All they have to do is write into their user agreement that you will not share the token, which you won’t even know exists unless you decompile their app.
And I am not defending crap, you should try reading what I am writing and not what you think I wrote. I am agreeing that they have the right to restrict access to data on their servers! The simple solution, get a new service and have their build their own repo.
Yeah not doing the Overwolf thing. Not a fan of ads during “down time” in game. And their bullying of developers doesn’t help. I’m glad there are people trying to develop another API to end the dependency on CF.
I don’t think they’re shutting down. It’s more that their api access is likely to get revoked in the next couple months. In which case if we can get enough addon authors to switch to an alternative platform, the entire issue becomes moot and wowup can continue per normal.
I would love to know where this came from? I mean they can’t stop you from just turning of the addon manager once you have updated. It’s not like they are a direct link into WoW and can stream stuff to you on demand.
