“Just install manually! That’s fine! Stop going after Overwolf, they need to pay the bills!”.

Still waiting :

There’s nothing for Blizz to do. All the addons are within Blizz’s guidelines for addons

A website that hosts them and has ads still falls within the rules since Blizz can’t do anything about a website not charging users anything and only blocking api access

I get how you guys feel though, I 100% will not be using overwolf, I decided this back when they first announced “ads or a premium service” :man_shrugging:

ignore him. he seems to think that saying dont buy from scalpers, means you support scalpers. so apparently in his mind, saying dont use a predatory client, means you support predatory clients… you cant reason with someone like that.

Okay so you’re going to go with pointless runaround attacks of me saying stuff I didn’t say. You’re really disingenuous person I’m sorry that you need an add-on manager for your cheating addons that require daily updates.

Hey i can play that game also

Requiring me to go through their adware filled garbage client and locking out anything else is “asking for some form of monetary compensation”.

It’s a great thought but I don’t think they would. There is no precedent in all of gaming for a company to host the modding. . well. . hold up. . Steam?. . well. . sort of. . but not completely.

There is not gain to them having to manage things. And I suspect that many mod authors would be leery of turning over there code completely to Blizz.

But it is a thought to consider.

Did you pay for it?

Your argument would go like this:

You: Blizz, shut these guys down they are charging people to get addons
Blizz: How much?
You: They have ads in their software
Blizz: But how much did they charge you?
You: They are getting paid from the ads in their software and they removed access to their api
Blizz: But they own their software and the addons are still free

The curse downloader existed for years with ads and “paid update all”

Still waiting, stop dodging the question. You’re only further proving your intent here is to derail and troll in an attempt to defend Overwolf.

And there we have it, guys that support scalpers also supporting Overwolf. “Just don’t install their client”. I don’t want to, but they are blocking all other clients. Same as scalpers buying up all the 3080s and 3090s. I don’t want to buy off them, I want to buy off Newegg. It’s not in stock because of scalpers.

Till you answer me i wont answer you. Sorry buddy.

Same, if comes down to it I’ll just run the most minimal set of addons possible, so updating them from dev sites directly is practical. If devs decide to lock their addons up in overwolf… well, I guess I’ll need to write my own replacements where possible lol.

But I won’t do anything to boost Overwolf’s ad revenue even a cent.

Yes, through CPU and GPU cycles to display their ads and runing their garbage adware.

Why are you defending this ?

see what i mean. you cant speak logically with people like this.

I answered you. Now answer how many add-ons exactly do you manage manually if it’s such a viable way to do it ?

How is “Scalpers bought all the stock, I can’t buy stock” illogical to you ?

I think they were suggesting that Blizzard just tell Overwolf to knock it off, not actually manage all the addons.

It appears that what overwolf is intending is that no one has access to the files outside of their api - you wouldnt be able to dl and install an addon manually because to get the dl you would have to get it via overwolf.

Think of it as if they bought youtube and the only way you could watch a vid would be via youtube itself and no longer able to link them/view on facebook.

No the idea is the addon creators are paid ad revenue via traffic/exposure from their content going through overwolf. The content itself isnt monetized - the platform itself is - think watching twitch streams with invasive ads, not just ones that the streamer wants to use, but hard built ones into the framework itself that have no way of being disabled.

Imagine down the track when you click auto update but are forced to watch their adds - that have in the past been malware - for 30 secs before and dl begins.

Well, this is certainly going to be interesting. If anything this could push people to drop sub just because of this nonsense. I will not put adware on my system just to have addons. If anything this is already driving home that perhaps its time I leave this game. I’m already wary of this upcoming expansion as it is.

That argument won’t fly and you know it

I’m just pointing out that you’re wasting your time if you think there is anything Blizz can do.

Good luck though, if you can find a loophole to get it fixed it’ll benefit me

By that logic, all addons are paid for and should thus be banned. After all, it takes up bandwidth and CPU cycles to download them. In fact, you can’t even look for them without paying with that logic.
