Overcrowded Realm Update

What is the cap/max amount of people on a server at a time?

FYI now both Herod and Stalagg are at a 5K in queue so I guess it worked, they split it in half from the 10K wait, but it still seems a bit high.

It’s also mid-day, on a week day, when most people are either working or in school.

I don’t think it will be quite as bad as yesterday, but I’d have to imagine once 4-5pm hits, queues will shoot back up.

gotta admit that was reassuring!!!

It’s might not be 20k but I’m expecting 10k on the big servers still. Log in now and stay there if you can or you won’t be playing tonight

Thank you. This is the best response you could give to people who are upset. They need to wait for the servers to fill that they add before adding more because they need to assure those servers are healthy long-term, not just at launch. Queues are frustrating but the alternatives are worse. They also can’t dynamically add infinite layers because eventually they have to be removed come Phase 2. People are going to have to spread out or accept that they are okay with staying Herod or Faerlina with 10-20k queues. I know Blizzard doesn’t get a lot of good will but they are honestly doing what’s best for Classic in these cases.

This is being considered. That’s why there is a hard cap and they are not just infinitely adding more layers to alleviate the queues because eventually they will have to merge them all and they think that where Herod’s queue (and the others) begin is the sanest place they can allow for ALL people eventually being on one layer before Phase 2. Because they HAVE a plan for what happens if most people don’t quit is why you have these massive queues and can’t dynamically and infinitely increase the amount of people able to log in through more layers.

Wait what…???

They’ve already more than doubled the amount of US-East servers less than a day after launch. Those servers were already filled out and they were not even in the right ballpark when they estimated popularity.

Yes, they are still adding more but they are doing so in measured numbers consistently after each new server fills. My comment was responding to another user that asked what happens to layering if they don’t see the attrition/quitting rate they were expecting and I said that was already considered which is why there is a hard cap and not infinite layers because that hard cap is what they feel they can reasonably handle once they merge down to a single layer. hence the queues even though there is layering. Sorry for the confusion about who I was responding to.

The popularity of Classic WoW should have been expected to be high. As a long time player Id rather go back to the beginning than keep expanding. I think “WoW 2” should have came out instead of Cataclysm at least four years after WoTLK.

This is a very classic experience… things not going smoothly. I don’t know why I gave them credit to be able to pull this off.

I get that there are hurdles and technical things that get in the way but damn after all this time youd think they could hire people that can calculate this stuff out.

“Heck, we didnt know!” is a pretty stupid excuse.

My concern is the health of the newly added servers. A few months down the road how can we expect these newly added servers to maintain populations. It’s the lesser of two evils right now, play on an unstable population server or wait in ques for servers that will remain active through all phases. Either choice is negatively effecting the experience of the game

Blizzard wasn’t estimating, they were opening realms as they were all filled up by subs during name reservation. It is not Blizzard’s fault so many people refused to sub before launch day. Bliz opened more realms once people put their money where their mouths are.

@Silversun That’s why they are adding servers at a slower rate than people want them to because they are waiting for them to fill to a level that the long term population will be healthy.

Remember, this is not a vanilla low pop server. The labels low medium and high are RELATIVE. Low is low compared to the 25k queue high pop servers which is why the low pop servers can have 3-5k queues still. They’ve said that even the low pop realms have significantly larger populations than the high pops from vanilla. They are handling this in a way that works best for the long term health of the game. I hope that makes sense and clears up any confusion or worry you have about moving to a lower population realm.

… Blizzard has years and years of data about online launches from either their own launches or other popular or competitive games they’ve studied.

Any mistake is absolutely their fault because they are Blizzard and they know better.

Right, because none of us have any personal responsibility. :woman_shrugging: I listened to everything bliz had to say, planned accordingly and had a great launch experience. YMMV.

My server, one added shortly before launch, had a queue of like 30k+ I can only imagine Herod.
