If they were too big to be worn on the hip historically (think zweihander) they were carried like polearms.
The overwhelming majority of two handed swords were worn at the hip due to it being far more conveniant, comfortable, and much, much less awkward. You literally can’t even draw a long sword from a traditional sheathe from your back without some hilarious wiggling.
There are some modern designs that enable it but nothing that’s been found historically.
Most of the 2handed swords in WoW wouldn’t work on the hip because they’re waaaaay oversized. lol
Yeah, they definitely sit a bit weird in WoW. It’d be really nice if they could make them sit more realistically.
