I was managing a record store in 86 and Kix were huge.

Pretty sure it’s been proven that they just see you as a means of getting things they want/need.
They did tests and showed that the endorphin (the happy hormone) levels of cats don’t change when they see their owners (even after prolonged absence).
This is unlike humans or even dogs which show a significant spike of endorphins when they see people/things they like.
Basically they just use us
