One main concern regarding the water strider debacle

So players who earn and learn the water strider while leveling in Pandaria will not be able to use it for water walking until they have completed Draenor.

:face_with_raised_eyebrow:

No. If you’ve unlocked it already - you will get one of the mount equipment pieces (that provides water walking) that you can mail to whichever character you want the water walking ability on. As long as the character you intend on using it on is level 20+, you can use the gear. But if you need to switch it (to say stun immunity) you lose water walking until you put on the gear piece that grants the water walking.

so why didn’t they just give us the ability to trans-mog the water strider into a different mount instead
they could even lock it behind a BfA fishing rep?

Only Blizzard knows the 100% truth behind that… but there’s honestly countless other ways they could have done it instead of just taking the option away (from those who’ve earned it already) and forcing us to pay for the option every time we need to switch out mount utility.

You only get it free on the character with the Anglers reputation. Therefore if you want it for free on all of your characters you would have to grind out said Anglers rep on all of them. You CAN buy the token and send it to each alt from your main character that has the rep at a discounted price but it still isn’t free.

The way I see it is thus; if they left the innate ability on the water strider and made it like the Sky Golem (unable to equip the new items) then everyone with the water strider would just keep it as it is currently (mine is hot keyed) and then put the no daze item on the rest of their mounts and nothing would change, all strider owners would have a water walking mount AND no daze mounts (or glider). Apparently that’s not on their agenda for some reason.

I believe that this is where your disconnect is happening, believing that (even if you don’t have Anglers rep) you can just log on and get the item from the vendor. You can’t without grinding the rep. We ground out the rep, we bought the mount, we were able to have a water walking mount on all of our characters because of it. Now we won’t unless we buy as many inflatable shoes as we have alts.

What Bluebeards said - you get 1 free one. After that, you need to pay for the “shoes” for each character you want the water walking option on. If you swap it out for something else, you’ll need to buy another (from the anglers) to be able to re-equip it on your mounts (each and every time you switch back to the water walking option).

But you cannot unlock equipment slots until you are level 100.

So a player who is leveling through Pandaria, and getting the strider can no longer water-walk at all until they have a level 100 to unlock the system.

So we have more need for gold, for equipment, leading to more people buying tokens, and more pressure to level up fast, which will mean more players buying boosts.

And people believe Blizzard is doing this because water striders are “overpowered”.

Correct. That’s how it’s been presented at this point. It’s anyone’s guess on if it will change (I doubt it). And that’s where a lot of the frustration/angst is coming from. Those of us who worked for it feel shorted, and as I stated - they could have come up with any number of better ways to implement it.

If you look at it reasonably and logically - as it’s currently presented - it’s a huge nerf and impacts a lot of things. Speaking personally, I have the mount hotkeyed - and I use it all over the place (to get around) while I level alts; whether I’m crossing a river, or a lake, or going along the seashore.

I’d like to interject. based off the presentation. He said “You get an Equipment slot, pick an item and all your mounts gain that ability.” So We lose Water Walking on our Strider, and only get it back if we choose the water walking item for all our mounts to have. We get 1 slot unless they plan to make it Per Mount or add extra slot gains somehow. If it is per mount I’m fine losing Water walking on my strider, if its 1 Slot for All mounts for 1 ability then I’m completely against losing Water Walking on the Strider.

sorry more confusion now
“You get an Equipment slot, pick an item and all your mounts gain that ability.”
do get a single saddle that shares across all our mounts with only a single slot per character?

This might be a stupid question, since i have main’d a Hunter since 2005, but where do i have a water walking option with my hunter since i think i vaguely remember something like it way back in BC maybe? Theres been so many changes, i honestly can not remember.

If you tame a Water Strider as Beast Master you gain the Ability to Grant yourself Waterwalking with its ability.

That is what I heard. It shares across your Character’s Mounts, not per mount.

As far as I’m aware - yes.

On that same note - right now, you can get a player made item that gives you stun immunity while mounted. Once this change goes live, it’s more or less restricting players to one option (instead of being able to use buffs that stack like we’re able to right now); hence why I feel it’s a huge nerf.

I always have a few useful mounts barred, one being a water strider, and use Opie, and have random mounts on my mouse wheel. Never worked out why some people say they have to use the strider all the time.

My problem with this equipment system is

  • I have 2 full accounts, and don’t see why I should have to pay for them all to be able to use something I earned and Blizzard is taking away, and

  • bad as this is for people with many alts, we can expect Blizzard to make it even worse next expansion, as they love the pathfinder idea and they don’t allow crafted items to be useful in subsequent expansions.

Ahhh ok cool, never knew. Guess thats on me for not catching that note when it was published. Never thought of taming a Strider as a pet, there not very pet worthy, and scary like other choices. Like Cranes lol, so intimidating lol.

Thanks.

Your welcome. Most of Pandarias pets came with special abilities for Beast Masters. Like Quillen can do Battle Rez.

for further clarity…
character.
singular.

People that didn’t grind for the water-strider shouldn’t be able to walk on water. Full stop

Yeah i thought they took most of those abilities away. Specially rez, but again lol, thats on me. I thought i asked in game what pet still had rez, and was told none of them. I should have checked wow-petopia like i usually do.

Ugh.
