Older gamers - Pain issues in hands/fingers?

He’s gotta be a gynecologist, right?

Im 47 and have had some thumb issues especially in the mornings, I needed to wiggle them abit to get them moving.
Well the other night at 1 am, I couldnt move my left thumb at all so I was Pressing/Stretching it against my bed mattress and POP, I Ruptured my EPL tendon.
Now Im outta work ( Very physical job ) for I dunno when, Get an MRI next thursday to see how bad it is. For now I gotta wear a Splint Cast.

I gave up several common foods that I was reacting to and am now pain free.

As an older casual player (usually no more than 12 hours per day) I can say yeah hands start hurting alot over time. I have found though that ice packs and edibles help keep things good.

it will make a BIG difference if you are suffering from osteo or Rheumatoid Arthritis. I am 73 and Osteo is my problem. Joint supliments help me out a great deal

I’m only in my mid 30s, but Ive recently begun to develop stiffness and soreness in my hands mostly from longer than usual gaming sessions thanks to the ongoing Backstreet Boys Reunion Tour. Getting a good pair of compression gloves to wear while gaming made all the difference for me. Now I don’t wake up with stiff fingers or the stiffness is much less pronounced and fades quickly.

I don’t know which hand you’re having trouble with. But I play with a gaming pad (Razer Tartarus). It helps with keeping your wrist not bent.

The major thing is to take frequent breaks and dont overstrain your hand and arms.

And constant use of mouse clicking over 40 years has caused me major issues with my right middle finger.

Also, be aware of carpal tunnel. Its a frequent RSI issue.

pretty often. sometimes i start to lose sensations in my left pinky too.

i just shrug and shake my wrists a bunch of times and keep on.

lets be real i wouldnt stop gaming even if it wrecked my hand. #priorities.

*maybe cbd would help? is that a thing?

I have many of the symptoms you describe as an over-ripe 53 year old. Left unchecked, I eventually started having rotator cuff issues that cause all sorts of range-of-motion problems.

It’s quite challenging to tell friends and families that your ongoing body pain is from ‘pwning nOObs’ in AV without some serious judgement back my way.

Doesn’t help that my day job is a desk/writing intensive gig.

Thank you thank you for adding this! I didn’t know and would have been sad to contribute to pet problems.

Try some Mineral Ice, which works much better than Ben Gay, Icy hot ect. When you first put it on, you think that it seems to work, and THEN it kicks in, and the sensation is heavenly.

For those of us who have a hard time stopping the game to have a break or for whom time flies, there is an addon called Breaktime that will remind you in-game. Very helpful to me.

I’m only 32 but i started developing really bad pain in my hands from arthritis when i was about 26. I was basically to the point where i was going to have to quit raiding because i simply cannot mash my keys anymore without wrecking my hands.

I discovered my Logitech G600 idk if its a solution permanently. Maybe my thumb will experience the same wear as my fingers eventually. But i no longer have these problems outside of arthritis flare-ups which happen even when i’m not playing.

Nope, but pain in both my elbows from playing. Tennis elbow. Have to only play on days off work for at most 30 mins at a time.

I totally agree with this because I think WoW naturally (just due to time) has an older demographic so they would be smart to tailor the game to this demographic and keep those as loyal and ongoing paying customers. This whole push to turn WoW into an eSport is a complete business fail in my opinion.

Anti-inflammatories; My doctor prescribes Diclofenac/Voltaren for my spinal stenosis/herniated discs. Really helps with the ache and inflammation.

Kratom for any higher elevation of pain.

Glad to be helpful, and glad to have saved you emergency vet bills. Those guys are wonder workers - but man do you pay for the privilege.

There are finger / wrist exercises and stretches that musicians do, and some of those might help you. Beyond that, not sure what to tell you. I’m the same age as you,and fortunately my hands don’t give me any problems (just the rest of me is falling apart lol)

Your hands are important and complicated machines. Over time the joints wear out and your oiling mechanism fails.

Many different things could cause the pain you’re experiencing so going to see a doctor and then likely a specialist is the right decision. I will advise something i’ve done that helps. Get a dish towel fold it in half and place it under your keyboard so it hangs back and pads the desk below it (closer to you). This will slightly elevate the bottom of the keyboard which is a more natural incline and also pad your wrist where it rests. If you’re feeling pain, you can take the dish cloth and rinse the bottom half in hot water. The warmth will help your wrist and your circulation which can soothe your fingers. These are just treatments, not cures, so still see your doctor.
