Cleared every boss up to thaddius in naxx during vanilla as a resto druid.

I recall rogues dominating overall with mages and locks topping meters on ranged fights. We had one fury warrior that got his pick of gear, and while he was up there he did not excel in damage despite knowing his class very well. Hunters weren't great but there were fights they were up there on the meters.

It's evident to me that private servers have warrior dps wrong, which makes me wonder what other errors have been made in their development.

No, it’s more that Warriors didn’t become overpowered until the very late patches. Most of vanilla WoW they were not OP, but in patch 1.12.1 they were #1 dps killing machines.

What I'm describing is experience in the midst of 1.12 where I did not see evidence of op warrior dps. This is consistent with videos of vanilla naxx - there's no deluge of dps warriors evident in top guilds during 1.12.

Where is your evidence they were number 1 dps? Please don't say private servers.

Decimator (1550 dps fury warrior at patchwerk pre TBC)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=26ACEQmdslA

While the title is somewhat misleading as he topped out at 1550 DPS but ended at 1235 DPS, this video is from actual retail Vanilla with the Fury Warrior in double KT 1hand weapons.

Also worth noting that this is NOT during the TBC 2.0.1 pre-expansion patch either.

Comparatively, the top Fury Warriors on Lightshope do ~1500-1600 DPS

Thanks for that.
Few things I'd say here without having watched the video:

-hard to believe the warrior would have two KT one handers in 1.12 though it is theoretically possible
-using your numbers the private server warriors are doing 20-25% more damage than the top warrior in vanilla. That's a game breaking difference.
-my experience is all raids up to mid naxx. Definitely possible that fully geared fury warriors are top once naxx is cleared. Though I'd argue meters no longer matter at that point.

2. Most players were dumb aka bad in retail Vanilla from 2005-2006 (myself included) - even in the case of this video, I am told by endgame Fury Warriors, that Lilos messed up a few times and could have pushed his DPS much higher.

3. Which means that private server players in min/max guilds push the very envelope for what is possible for DPS.

Oh yea because no one who's played on pservers ever touched real Vanilla. Lol.
That being said though there is a healthy pop on pservers of 20 somethings and younger.
Their knowledge of that patch is there. Trust me.
If it's even similar (which yea it should be)

I played both real Vanilla and private WoW, and the private servers are not accurate, they are fun tho.

Claiming things have been some how refined and improved in the last 13 years is also kinda funny considering the average player in WoW, Vanilla, TBC, Wrath, Cata, MoP, WoD, Legion, BFA, or any private realm on average is still just as average as ever doesn't help your claim.

Additionally I'd argue players of video games have not improved, but actually gotten worse individually.
...

Thanks for that.

Yep I don't disagree with anything you've said. I am still not convinced that fury warriors are top dps during naxx or pre naxx progression - quite possible they're top post naxx. I suppose it's also possible that fury was too complicated in vanilla and players have subsequently figured them out - I'm just not willing to rely on private servers to reach that conclusion as it's contrary to my experience.
Pirate wars are in for a shock when vanilla comes out.

I bet they are generating more rage than they should be on the fake servers.
Our top fury warrior pulled a high 900 on patchy. No idea what weapons he was using (not KT stuff) His gear was all rag tag stuff, he wore some blue quality items in Naxx. This was probably on a 5-6 minute kill. He wasnt very high on the meters untill execute phase.

As far as warrior progression dps, don't expect to be leading the pact when your wiping at 40%. Things like a Tfury tank help.

Rogue are a much more rounded dps class.
