I believe this is my problem. I was playing BFA till this morning. Game crashes at start of new cinematic. I downloaded the zip for wine 5.19, but don’t know how to get Lutris to notice it. I’m not a tech guy, was windows only till a few months ago. I don’t know “configure” or “prefix” etc.
As an update:
- Following my guts, I tried a full clean install: Removed everything with Revo Uninstaller, WoW and Battle.net, everything and tried a clean install from the beginning. Didn’t help.
- Tried DDU + reinstalling the drivers, no help there.
- Mutiple runs in compatibility mode, still same issue.
So the only visible options since there’re has been no new response from anyone from Blizz are:
-
Upgrading hardware: Impossible for me, despite people saying how “cheap” everything is…I live in Brazil, a place where most if not all electronics are almost 2 times as expensive as what you see in countries like US, Australia, etc and if I try to import anything, I’ll pay twice as much just in taxes due to “let’s make the internal market more appealing” policies. My income is what today could be converted to 180 USD, from which 80% go for rent, basic expenses, food, etc and 10% go to helping my family to survive. If you do the maths, what is left can afford me what is equivalent of a donut. All I had saved has gone due to COVID layoffs so, not an option.
-
Waiting for some kind of work around: Probably not going to happen, as Blizzard stated that things like what I have are not even minimal requirements to run the game, meaning (I say this as someone that is a developer) that for the company/organization, making backports/compatibility maintenance would not be a good “deal”, and it is better to tell people that the system is not supported. The requirements have been up for some time, and some of us don’t have the ability to make the needed “amends” to keep going, but as a general decision, makes sense since this is similar to not loading an website on IE6 because it’s damn old.
All this said, I’m really sad by the fact that the game that has helped me so much in the past go trough hard times is not an option any more. I hope that people that are in similar situations can find ways to work around this issue, and have fun with the new expansion. If you can afford to get something that can at least open the game, I recommend you to do so. If in any time Blizzard fix this, be sure I’ll be supporting the game as it has been supporting me. For now, all I can do/say is “Good luck friends”.
As of now i haven’t found a work around. Most of us have tried it all, updates, re-install, repairs, this is on blizz’s end. I see alot of dropped subs and refunds for expac coming very soon.
Yes my computer was good enough even through Mythic Nya. Only issues would be a little in Epic battlegrounds but even then still playable.
Caterpepi, any news?
Any news?
Any useful information recieved?
Interesting thought: on EU forums there are no ppl with this issue. Is it US-only?
Even a ‘still working on it’ would be better news then nothing
First off, Blizzard did tell people that the system requirements (especially the minimum system requirements) were going up, they posted it on Sept. 1st. The pre-patch basically brings the game forward to Shadowlands (without the actual Shadowlands content).
Even if you’re just doing BFA (or earlier expansions content), you are still doing that on Shadowlands platform which means you need to meet the higher system requirements.
Yes WoW is an old game, but the continual updates means that players will need to adjust their systems from time to time to keep playing. Short of Blizzard reversing their stance on cloud-gaming streaming services (i.e. Stadia, GeForce Now, Parsec), you won’t be able to play WoW on ancient computer systems.
They could have posted the system requirements with the packages to pre order the new expansion. I pre ordered only to find out I didn’t meet the system requirements by a hair, and then only to find out that I can’t even open the game anymore whatsoever.
If you dont have problems then go and play and shut up
Wow, you’re more than a tad rude.
Soon with this behaviour, you will meet karma
Just to clarify a point: while yes, I see people that have setups from 2012, there’re many like me, who have stuff from Q4 2016, as well as people with stuff from 2018 that are experiencing the issue, so this is not really affecting ancient systems, unless that by ancient, you mean that are not born in the last 10~12 months.
I understand your instance and point, just keep in mind that system requirements and specs are baseline in most cases, meaning that you can’t blame people for feeling bad about running the game at the morning then being unable after the pre-patch. The requirements were up for a long time, and the information was available in the shadowlands pre-purchase screen, so it is correct to say that Blizzard did warn people.
What people are annoyed is that they cannot even try to run the game and make their decision, it was made for them. I say this from a technical background, it is the correct decision to operate this way, what is not good is the handling. Currently, many people feel “robbed”, “scammed” as other terms I saw in this thread, since they are being met with a huge “NOT ALLOWED” after getting pumped up coming with high expectations from an expansion (BfA) that was lukewarm in many aspects to the possibly biggest change in the game (Shadowlands).
As for people loosing their temper and being aggressive, remember that this is an MMO, and that one of consequences is that updates are rolled out equally. If graphics get updated, everyone gets it. What we can do is provide good information and perhaps, if you have the knowledge, work around, technical advice and possible tips for Blizzard devs in how to proceed with this situation. I believe that we all like this game, if not we wouldn’t be supporting it financially and having fun with it. Now it’s the time to be logical and look options, because most of this is out of our hands.
The only work around I know of off the top of my head is going to be risky, and generally a bad idea. The only way to get past this issue short of Blizz changing something would be flashing the bios on the gpu to report a false name. It’s what the fake cards sold on ebay do, to fool unsuspecting buyers.
I’m not gonna try to post info on how to do this because there is a good chance of harm to the pc and it can lead to a whole slew of other problems.
Also really well said Akhus.
Well, I am going to try to get another laptop (might have to do the Deuce Bigelow thing) in order to get back to playing.
Yes, a lot of people are correct on both sides of this issue.
Hard upgrades are a must in order to NOT have any issues if you are able to maintain that sort of income, budget and maniacal upkeep. Kind of like Apple iPhone users who buy the latest release every time it comes out.
But keeping a player base in respect to the masses’ average gaming rigs is probably tantamount to the success of your product. There aren’t only high-end PC/laptop players that play WoW. There are medium rig and lesser rig users too.
So since a lot of businesses are having sales right now, I might as well try to get a new laptop. But I want to make damn sure that this new laptop will last 2-3 more WoW expansions without any issues. With that being said, this is the laptop I am thinking of getting:
Looks like these are supported under the WoW minimum requirements. (Wish me luck!)
There are more good deals at Dell: https://deals.dell.com/en-us/category/laptops
Thing is hardware this old isn’t the “masses’ average” gaming rig. It’s the real low end. The average would be somewhere between stuff that is below minimum and stuff that isn’t near as powerful as top end.
I’m running an i7 with a 2080Ti and having this issue so it isn’t just out of date hardware having issues.
I did a fresh install, no addons/wtf/cache to get in my way…no dice. Game starts and it is a total black screen. I hear the cut scene playing for about 30 seconds before it crashes. Can’t send any keyboard interrupt commands to stop the client and my machine has to be hard shut down.
I think making a different thread would get you farther. This thread was about the card not supported pop up. What you’re experiencing is a very different issue. Filing a bug report if you can would be a good idea also.
This was hardly a surprise for me once i couldn’t start prt but a part of me was hoping that it was due to blizzard gating out of date tec from submitting bug reports. But alas.
Even though it is sad to see this i am still happy there are other people with me in this cosy vintage boat we have going on here for ourselves.
Last time this sort of thing happend was in 8.1 when it took 15-20 min to start the game. was eventually fixed after a month of nagging. Not expecting this one to help since the laptop is half dead basicly but it was 15-30 fps before prepatch and could even run firefox at same time!
tldr: Same HD 3000 rock and roll gang.
Regardless of your specs you all beautiful here! Never change!
xoxo.

I’m in the same boat as some of these people, I have a laptop from 2009 with an ATI 4650 on it, it’s held itself well and I still run a lot of stuff on it without hiccups, my roommate mostly uses it now days to watch movies and play WoW casually. Sadly, neither of us are ready to dish out money for a brand new laptop or desktop at this point, given the pandemic, it’s not a good time to invest in something like that either considering the amount of economic unknowns going on. Sadly, WoW is extremely editable in terms of graphics settings, there’s plenty of mods you can do with just macros, I’m actually apalled they would put a hard NO YOU CANNOT PLAY Anymore other than a warning where your card will simply not perform up to standard, whatever that means. I played WoW for 10 years raiding with under 20 fps, so… not really sure why all of a sudden we’re gutting old hardware to the ground.
im brazilian and I having the same problem,Im was able to plaing nicely the game with 15~30 fps on my laptop before the pre-patch,for me is awesome just to farm some lagacy stuff on my work, after the patch my game not even open, just says that my 3d card is not compatible anymore, this is no sense, here on the regional forum and in the spanish forums there’s a lot of people with this error.
