I’ll have some fun here:
Not Played Tier
-
Cata - Got bored towards the end of WotLK, left and missed the whole expansion. Questing was fun at least, but I’m always looking at this one as “I played it after it was relevant.”
-
DF - Waiting until it’s baseline, actually curious. Dragonriding in MoP Remix has been fun.
Garbage Tier
-
SL - Missed it when it was current, but… goddammit, that questing experience was horrible!!! By far the worst of any expansion, to the point I won’t give it a pass to the “unrated” category Cata got. If not for MoP Remix, which was a purely a fluke, I’d have already left again. Though I’m pretty much done with Remix, I am having some fun reliving other expansions and collecting transmogs during the meantime.
-
BfA - Pissed me off enough to quit the fame for years, only came back recently for a nostalgia trip and to sate my curiosity.
Bronze Tier
-
TBC - While I had fun at the time… in retrospect, this is when the more free-form fun I had during Vanilla started to unravel. It was also the start of building the game to lead everyone into endgame content, which I didn’t get into at the time; though my dislike of it didn’t solidify until much later.
-
WoD - The only expansion where I raided with a guild. Had a lot of fun doing that… but things started to shift after clearing HFC normal. Heroic wasn’t as fun, and I wandered off in early Legion.
Silver Tier
-
WotLK - Looking back, it’s obvious that WotLK was riding on WC3 lore and the success of WoW in general. It’s the culmination of what came before… and oof, it’s age shows. Still had fun during it, but it felt more “regimented” and the steering towards raid content didn’t end.
-
Vanilla - New to MMOs, not a damn clue what I was doing, but a mind for exploration and experimentation. Latched onto affliction warlock for fear-kiting elite mobs to solo them and wall-hopping into inaccessible areas. Got good at both… at least until Blizz changed things. WoW hasn’t been the same since.
Gold Tier
-
Legion - I had a lot of fun during this expansion, but mostly because of Lore-related stuff… and the Mage Tower. But yeah, some of the systems introduced were not so fun; especially when they were doubled down on for BfA.
-
MoP - The more I look back, MoP is when I had the most fun. Fun gameplay throughout, better-than-expected storytelling. I actually enjoyed LFR (my first exposure to it), mostly the Lei Shen fight, and the Legendary Cloak was a great addition (why did they ever remove it?) apart from that one PvP step. Shame it ended on SoO, which was merely “okay” in my eyes. Still great to revisit.
