[Wave Broadband] Intermittent Latency and Packet Loss

I need Wave Broadbands GNOC team to reach out to Blizzards peering support team. I don’t know what any of this means and I have done everything I can. I have WinMTR tests from both blizzard servers and the server Thrall, which i play on. I linked the one mentioned in my ticket down below. Please send help.

  1. WinMTR Test
  2. Explaining my issue
  3. Quotes from my ticket with maybe helpful information.

2. Issue/rant

For the past 3+ weeks I have been nonstop lagging on WoW. I can play any other games, stream, and watch videos with zero issues. It is only WoW and I have done everything in my power to fix it. I did a complete ui reset, tried reinstalling the game, updated drivers, tested wired/wireless connections, even bought a vpn, and nothing works. The lag never goes away and makes the game annoying and unplayable. I freeze in place constantly for a few seconds and then everything speeds up to catch up to real time. I can press an ability 5 times and see the global cooldown rotate without the ability going on cd until seconds later. My ms is constantly fluctuating, and it’s noticeably higher in instanced content such as raids/mythic plus. I sent in a ticket and did all of the tests. Blizzard told me to reach out to my ISP and push this issue for them to help me. I had a lengthy conversation with Wave Broadband and they disregarded me saying it’s not their problem since it’s only WoW and that this is on Blizzard’s end. I sent them a transcript of my Blizzard ticket that explains all the steps I need to take to resolve this issue and they wont help me. Blizzard says reach out to ISP, ISP says reach out to blizzard. Someone please help me.

3. Information from my ticket

“We’ve seen issues off and on with this provider in the past from what I see in most cases it ended up being a routing configuration issue of some kind. So what does that mean. It means every now and again with this ISP for the last few years we’ve seen routing configurations leading to our services. When we restart the servers think of it as a power cycle but configurations may not always get picked up by a certain ISP or they may be wrong which would explain the time frame of it starting.”

"The process to getting this resolved in the past has been getting Wave Broadband’s Gnoc team to reach out to our peering support team(This is not a player facing service it’s for your ISP’s GNOC team.) That is a really fast way to start the process."

“I would strongly recommend to try this first, push to have the issue escalated to your Internet Service Provider and when you first talk to them bring up this issue has occurred before with our services and it always seems to result in needing both GNOC teams to resolve a configuration issue.”

I am having this issue as well. I have Wave Broadband in California.

Same issue. Wave Broadband Ca. Exact issues as op . Called wave as suggested and they said “Sir this is something on blizzards end” I dont believe them , any other route i/we the ppl of wave can take ?!

I just got off the phone with Wave’s Tech support and i quote " We dont have a GNOC team"

Hey all,

Checking into this, it looks like it may be an issue between Wave California and the Central US data centers. Everyone posting here appears to be playing on a WoW server hosted in the Central US (Chicago) data center.

We would like to gather fresh WinMTR data (using the Central IP 24.105.62.129) when the issues are occurring.

Anyone else using Wave on the West coast experiencing issues please feel free to chime in and post your WinMTR results. Thanks!

I’ve been having it for weeks, pretty much unplayable. Every 10 or 20 seconds i get a lag (freeze) spike between 2 and 5 seconds. After the freeze is over, everything goes extremely fast playing catch up. I ran 3 different WinMTR tests…here are the results:

The common factor here seems to be
et-0-0-29-br01-eqla1.as57976 net

also, why is it when you run an IP lookup on any of those, they are in the Netherlands (but they are given to us as the US West) address.

Hey there,

To answer your question, IP lookup services can only see where the IP is registered not where the servers are physically located. Our servers for World of Warcraft Americas region are located in LA (West) and Chicago (Central). Depends on which server you’re playing on for where you’re connecting to.

I noticed that all of the reports on this forum thread are being submitted around a similar time every day. Checking the timestamp against the ISP data on our end suggests this is when they are at peak hours for players logged in to our games.

I’m noticing a trend in these MTR reports, the problem seems to start at an Equinix node in San Jose. Equinix is a peer network so it may not be an issue with any of Wave’s equipment. Their network engineers would need to reach out to peering partners to ensure all the routing info they have is updated.

Of course, since this is a limited number of users being affected I might also still suggest device troubleshooting for the modem. Such as a power cycle or contacting the ISP to check for firmware updates.

Thanks for following up with us on this. Hope the info helps.

I came to tech support for a different issue involving being stuck in a bg and I noticed this thread.

I have Wave broadband in sacramento california and I play on tichondrius (So cal server) without gameplay issues but I do have minor chat delay issues, but I do maintain a constant 28 or 29 ms otherwise. I also adjusted latency from the standard 400 to 180 using the addon advancedinterfaceoptions (not blizzard recommended, but it helps my gameplay latency)

In network settings in game the only option I have checked is Optimized Network for Speed and I often flush my DNS using windows key + r and typing ipconfig /flushdns just to keep things clean.

I do have toons on sargeras server and there is some lag but nothing over the top like whats posted above. I feel its just the distance between where I live and the actual sargeras server. I get 78-80 ms there and use 220 for my advancedinterfaceoptions latency for the best results.

I’ve been experiencing latency spikes up to 1000ms and packet loss when connecting to the Wow US Central server from Wave Broadband in Seattle. I’ve included an MTR below

This started around January 9th. Based on information from a ticket I submitted, this is happening for Overwatch as well.
This issue does not reproduce for Wow US West servers

I attempted to contact Wave engineers, but CSS was unwilling to send them the information without sending out a tech (which will take over a week)

I also live in Seattle and posted the same problem the other day. Save me.

Also live in Seattle and have Wave, and I’ve also been experiencing this for the past few days. I am in Eternal Palace right now, and have 3750 ms. This is ridiculous. I’m a Mythic raid leader and I cannot play like this right before a patch.

Although my situation doesnt pertain to WoW, im having the exact same issue with overwatch. Wave G in Bellevue, insane lag on quick play servers, almost no lag in practice range. Apologies if this isn’t the right place to put this, it felt relevant enough to me. The issue has been going on from 4pm-7pm Jan 13th so far.

Please call Wave and report your issue. The more reports they get, the more likely it is they will look into it. I already had my ticket escalated up to a supervisor.

I live in California, I also have Wave Broadband and around Jan 9th, 2020 I noticed huge lag spikes and latency issues myself. I connect to a US Central server from San Fran.

I’m on stormrage which is an east coast server. I will say I just tried to create a character on Proudmoore, a west coast server, and it seemed fine. I wonder if it’s something to do with the routes across the country??

Hey folks,

It looks like you folks are having the same issue that we were previously investigating here. I’m going to re open our old tracker on this. I merged the threads.

If there’s another spike in these problems, can we get winMTR tests from anybody who hasn’t provided one yet, as well as the time of day when the problem happens? We need this information to help demonstrate impact of the issue if it’s persisting for a while.

When running WinMTR would you like the Host to be 24.105.62.129 ?
