Updating to 12.5.1 DID fix my audio problem, but as of yesterday the problem is back on my mac mini. I tried playing it through its built-in speakers, a 3.5mm jack and neither worked. Oddly, a bluetooth speaker worked after selecting “No sound driver”, but the effect didn’t hold when I disconnected the bluetooth and tried the other speakers.
out of curiosity, have any of you disabled SIP (System Integrity Protection)? If you have, you definitely shouldn’t.
I’m out of other guesses. I can’t reproduce problem on either of my 12.5.1 macs.
I have same problem on my M1 mac mini. Have macOS 12.5.1 no sound, all settings correct. I found that as was suggested above I can get sound thru my AirPods but that is all. No sound thru mac mini built in speaker, headphone jack, or even USB headset, only Bluetooth seems to work.
I’m running 12.5.1 and no sound. So the update alone isn’t a fix for everyone
If I have my AirPods active I can get all sources to show in the sound panel in WoW and select my speakers and get sound. If I put the AirPods in the case audio drops from speakers when the bluetooth device goes to sleep. Like the audio is somehow routed to the wrong source or tied to Bluetooth in some way.
I have this problem on my M1 Mini. More accurately, I’ve had this problem on my Mini three times since 9.2.7 was released. Twice I’ve fixed it, twice it’s come back.
The first time I experienced it, I was running Big Sur 11.6.7. Sound went out. As it happens, I received a notification shortly thereafter that Big Sur 11.6.8 update was available to download. After installing the update, sound was back to normal.
The second time I experienced it, I was running Big Sur 11.6.8. Sound went out just like the first time. Prior to the sound going out, I had a weird (and unprecedented) issue where my Wi-Fi briefly stopped working. I turned Wi-Fi off and then back on again - got Wi-Fi back, but sound stopped working. Futzed around with things a little, then decided to upgrade to Monterey 12.5.1, seeing as how that fixed the problem for so many others. Upgraded the OS, sound was back to normal.
The third time I experienced it was today. Sound went out just like before – only today it went out after the machine crashed and rebooted itself. Upon logging in for the first time after the self-reboot, the OS presented me with the standard “The machine rebooted - can we send a message to Apple?” dialog box… which it then sent on its own without me clicking “OK”. I didn’t get a chance to read the log entry before it was sent - anyone know where that is stored? Maybe it contains a clue. Sound was working perfectly until the crash and reboot.
In two of the three occasions I’ve experienced this issue, the OS exhibited atypical behavior just before the problem manifested itself again. I strongly believe that a change was made in the 9.2.7 version of the client software that doesn’t play nice with the OS – as others have mentioned, sound has never been an issue until now, and I’ve been playing WoW on Macs since Burning Crusade.
As an aside, I do not use any Bluetooth clients with this Mac. Bluetooth would not seem to be a factor in my situation.
I’m having the same problem.
I’m running 12.5.1 and having no sound, with only System default and no sound driver in the drop down menus in WOW. However, if I connect my AirPods to my Mac mini M1 and toggle from one to another in the drop down menu, all of my audio devices show in WOW. Now here’s the kicker, if I keep my AirPods connected to the Mac and out of the case, but change my Mac audio output to my 3.5mm headphones and change the WOW drop down menu to the headphones, I will get game sound through my headphones. But when I put away my AirPods back into their case the sound cuts out and all audio devices will vanish from the WOW dropdown menu and only have System default and no sound driver again.
I get the vibe that the WOW client is not jiving with the MacOS audio drivers.
Peace.
So I’ve updated my M1 Mac mini to 12.6 and for now at least my sound is working so seems. So perhaps something was wonky with macOS and WoW specifically for M1 mac mini and perhaps the Apple Studio also based on the numbers above. Doesn’t seem this issue was affecting iMacs or MacBook (Air or Pro) users. Fingers crossed hope that was the last of the audio issue for WoW on my mac mini.
Having similar issue on M1 Macs, OS 12.6 using USB headsets. The microphone shows up in the chat menu but the output is not being recognized somewhere along the way.
I had this issue on my M1 Mac Mini and it fixed itself after a MacOS update, came back and fixed again with an update. Other workaround was to connect a usb camera to it and then the normal sounds thru the Mini worked again, disconnecting it stopped working…
Now on my Mac Studio I never had this issue until today, I am running Ventura though.
I am also having this issue. The only fix so far is to shutdown and restart, often it take two times. Running macOS 12.6.
I too have had trouble with sound. Sound will work upon launch of the game on my 2020 M1 MacBook Air. But at seemingly random times sound will cut out. Game System settings will no longer list any sound devices. Only options will be default sound device and no sound driver. Nothing seems to fix the problem expect restarting the game. I’m running OS 12.6.
The crash and reboot is what happened to me in exactly the way you described it and I have no sound now. If I turn on my bluetooth headset, I can switch to no sound driver and sound comes back through my main speakers. If I click the sound driver again, I now see all the devices and select whichever and get sound. If I turn off the bluetooth headset, sound immediately goes away and all the devices disappear.
Mac Studio Max, MacOS 12.6. I did have an audio app installed, but I removed it and the issue is still the same.
Hopefully this helps get us to a resoltion. FYI, WoW is the only app that I get no sound in. Everything else I’ve tried works.
I haven’t played WoW in a few weeks. Jumped on today and whaddayaknow… sound is gone again. This will be the third time it’s happened, only this time there is no OS update available. Monterey 12.6
I imagine Apple will release an update in the near future? Again? I am fully expecting this to be an issue when the new expansion drops!
This is an ongoing problem. It has happened to many of us multiple times. Previously an OS update fixed it but not today. The sound only works via bluetooth when this happens. No good for people using 3.5mm or USB speakers.
I have an intel mac and no sound in retail or classic since this started. Computer has the latest OS updates.
I am not sure if this is really a Blizzard issue, Apple issue, or both. I have no sound in both classic and retail World of Warcraft on an up to date base model m1 Mac mini.
It’s really frustrating since I bought this mac to do a little of everything (work, play, server stuff), and now I am here looking into running World of Warcraft in Crossover (other virtualization methods- Parallels), or purchasing a cheap Windows laptop. Beyond the a “fix” of using a Bluetooth audio device, which to be totally honest, should not be the solution.
I am not sure what Blizzard’s Apple player base is, but seeing that this thread has been open since August 17 (and another one I saw from September), this issue just might not be all that high priority for them. That is if it is even something Blizzard can fix themselves.
Not hearing any audio really takes the enjoyment from playing the game for me, personally. Especially in Classic, since I really want to hear that Grizzly Hills music in-game.
It is really a weird issue, I don’t have this issue anymore on Monterey since April this year, but I have it on my Ventura beta 11 while even updated that one yesterday. However if you connect like AirPods to it (Mac Studio) you get the option again to use the Mac Studio speakers and it will work again until you box the AirPods.
Yes, this is really baffling. I wish I understood this better. I connected my Sony Bluetooth headphones, and it polled all of the audio devices on my PC. I could choose my external speakers again, and they’d work until the Bluetooth device disconnected. I assume this will just be a waiting game for Blizzard to fix this. Or they never will. Who knows?
Google brought me here, so adding to the pile.
macOS Monterey 12.6 on an M1 2020 Mac Mini, and WoW sound stopped working for me via the Mini’s speakers or via HDMI to the TV monitor I hooked up. Sound in all other games, apps, and browser (YouTube) work just fine with either.
I went through all the troubleshooting in this thread and a few others and can’t figure out what the issue is. I also tried to connect sound via AirPlay to my TV (which is a supported option) but nada.
AirPods work, but I don’t want to be wearing them all the time.
