Night elf starting zone skinning?

There’s a guide to classic professions that said skinning and something else gathering profession can be picked up at any level:

You must obtain a certain player level to train the next rank

  • Apprentice - Level 5 for Production/Fishing and no req for Gathering
  • Journeyman - Level 10 for Production/Fishing and no req for Gathering
  • Expert - Level 20 for Production, Level 10 for Gathering and Fishing
  • Artisan - Level 35 for Production, Level 25 for Gathering, Level 10 for Fishing

Edit: other points were still valid. 1> I don’t know what’s skinnable in the initial starting zone, 2> It’s only an hour or two to finish all the initial zone quests and get at least a couple levels to survive fights against level 5 stuff 3> and by the time you run out to a city to get a skill you might as well just stay out there and skin things. (Over in retail I ran a dwarf down to goldshire and was level 2 just from zone discovery exp and killing a couple aggro trogs in the tunnel. And When I ran a tauren out to TB, he turned level 2 from explore and killing some animals that chased him around. Seemed to me like the first few levels kind of fell on me during the stress test too.)

That farming breakdown was pretty neat. But yeah, you’d need a lot of humanoids for the linen. Also probably need to kill 2-3 times as many humanoids for the linen since they don’t all drop linen. Every skinnable beast is skinnable, though I think you need 3 or so scraps to make a piece of light leather, so it might balance out in that way. So it comes down to whether you actually have more beasts or more humanoids early on.

Most of my guildies plan to just play whatever’s fun and let professions come as they will, though tailors will help with bags, and crafters help with weapons and armors while we work on our professions I think. One guy planning to just ignore professions until level 60 on his first toon, but that feels like missed opportunities to grab some skill points in passing while levelling.

It’s mining that NE have it the worst with. There is not a single mining node on the NE starting island.

skins = LW greens = DE matts = Enchanting skill points = wands
not saying its the most efficient way, but this is his plan.

I’ve seen both and honestly I don’t remember the specifics, but like you said there’s no point to wasting the time running to the trainer and back.

You are correct. Mobs in the starting zones are not skinnable. I tested this on both the stress tests and pre-launch event.

I wish the elves were skinnable. Then Nightelves would have some use in the game.

You can skin the low level boars, and the 2nd quest nightsabers, lvl 2 or 3.

If you get 1 silver you can get skinning for 10c and a skinning knife for 83c. You have to run towards Darn to get Skinning by the side of the road. Hearth back to the starting area and you can skin all that stuff.

There are no Furbolgs or bears in the NE starting area

Crafting leather pieces to send to your tailor to DE to craft a wand or I guess selling leather on the AH to buy a wand on the AH

I didn’t think any of the animals in the 1 to 5 level zone were skinnable

There is definitely Furbolgs in Teldrassil. Not in the 1-5 area, but the 5-10 area there is

They are, it’s just a matter of having the funds needed to train it and buy the skinning knife.

I gota test that when classic launches. I don’t remember what it was like in actual classic.

It would make sense if they were not skinnable.

Yes, it’s mostly just the cats.
But there are so many cats.
So many.
In the last stress test I did skin/leather on a Nelf hunter and completely geared myself by level 10 as far as armor (+armor kits). It didn’t take much farming at all, especially with all the people not skinning and the carcasses just lying around everywhere.

It is possible not many were taking professions on the stress test though because they knew progress would be wiped. It is far more likely on launch that everyone will be looting and skinning everything for cash.

Yeah, it’s like the entire center/south of the region is Furbolgs, and running up the Hill to the right of the main road about 1/2 way to the city.

Yes, I remember my girlfriend at the time getting upset I murdered all the rabbits on the dwarf starting area for leather scraps

There is but no skinning trainer, so you have to walk all the way to town, then hearth back. Most didn’t bother.

There’s a quest in Darkshore that rewards a wand around level 11? I think it’d be faster to duo mages til then than make an alt and juggle professions.

Also wands are a pretty common drop, I got quite a few just on the test weekend.

Unless crafted ones are a lot better, I don’t think I’d bother with all that. Especially if you’re not soloing.

Good luck though!
