[News] Shadowlands: A Look at Covenant Class and Signature Abilities *Updated 5/13

Tying unique spec abilities to covenants seems like a fairly bad idea.

Agreed. I don’t do anything serious but I still want to be able to pick based off of what looks/theme I prefer without having to worry if I’m gimping myself by choosing them.

“Getting better” would mean choosing the abilities that are actually good for our classes, so I agree with you there.

making a choice is not a punishment. why do you think choosing a over b is a punishment?

It’s a punishment if you care about performance in a game where performance matters? Just because you don’t care in your LFR and it has 0 impact on your play, doesn’t mean other players aren’t affected badly. What if you like PVP and PVE? Well, sucks to be you because one of those covenants has a PVP ability that makes you 10X better just by having it. But if you pick that, you’re going to be trash in M+, which you also like. No high keys for you! You get to be at a disadvantage solely because the system is badly designed.

How do you not see how that is bad for the game, even if it doesn’t directly hurt you?

It’s quite clear you don’t understand. This is an MMO more than it is an RPG. As was stated before, if this was in Skyrim or a single player RPG. It would be fine. But it’s not. As I said. Most people will choose what is optimal for their class and not choose what they actually want without it feeling bad. Covenant abilities don’t need to be a thing.

I’m fine with splitting it with character progression as long as they still remain in some shape or form. OR making it easy to switch.

If I am not mistaken a +19 mythic key is purely a personal challenge thing and not content the game is being balanced around. That is evident by not getting better rewards after +15

I can tell that many of these will get nerfed at some point in the expansion and upsetting a lot of people that have committed to a covenant. You cannot have covenant swapping be a pain.

these need to be baseline talents for all specs for the classes listed. make them lvl 60 talents not damn rental power!

I’m really hoping the Kyrian overall ability gets reexamined in the case of healers, who I assume will be making up a large amount of players who choose to align with them due to the aesthetics.

As a healer who can already cleanse diseases and poisons and heal myself, this seems really weak compared to the others, which is a bummer since I really like their theme and transmog.

they want the game to be balanced around stuff that almost no one does instead of balanced around the people who are the average player. a high number of forumers are people who do ridiculously hard content and they circle around each other in threads like this trying to convince everyone else that they should be balanced around. lol

Acutally you get more rewards when you push that high, which is more chances at things you may want for your class.

more rewards /= better rewards.

Also +19 actually isn’t that high. It’s above the average of 15 sure, but definitely not a +25-+30. I would understand his arguement there if it was that high a key.

Also I will say this. I’ve seen people playing “off meta” and do better than people that were playing whatever is deemed “meta” because they’re enjoying what they’re playing.

I personally would rather have someone that plays off-meta well, than someone that plays meta poorly because just playing their character makes them want to punch themselves in the face because they hate it.

With the ability for things to get corruption and sockets yes it does.

I’m in for the Kyrian. Looking forward to being sky high, beautiful blue skies, and nice abilities for my Hunter main.

Now, just let us fly around please?

Honestly, seeing it all written up like this makes me dislike the “every class gets a major class ability” concept. It’s pretty clear that this is a difficult, potentially constraining idea for the dev team to work with (SO many abilities aren’t even conceptualized here on this chart), and moreover it just feels like it’s going to unquestionably become “Ability A is best but I like Faction 3.”

I would much prefer this system if the following happened:

  • Our talent panel was expanded to four choices per row instead of 3.

  • At Level 60, we got these four abilities. They’re functionally identical for everyone, but your covenant determines their animations and small bits about their effects. For example, every DK could pick an ability that worked like the additional appendage option, but it’s only an appendage for Necrolords DKs. Maybe for Kirians, you summon a tiny Val’kyr instead for the bonus damage; for the Night Fae, a mushroom grows on your body and damages nearby people. That sort of thing.

I don’t want to have to choose between which ability I think is the coolest and which ability is the most practical. This is literally what happened with Seal of Blood versus Seal of the Martyr in The Burning Crusade. Please don’t make the same mistake again.

I love this idea! Give us different skins for some of our core abilities instead!

No, I’m not saying that at all, you were trying to make some earlier arguments and I was arguing against them. In fact I think all content should be avaiable to any player, and I try to help players out when I can. Its just some content is not cut out for some players which is fine, but it does matter to the players pushing into really hard content in the game. Along with you have the same access and capability as anyone else in the game. Its upto you wether you want to tap into it or not, and its fine if you don’t want to as no one is foricng you to.

Exactly. I don’t pick players off of what is meta. I pick off of personal skill. Raider IO is a good barrier to determine that on a screening level. When we go run the content we will see further whether they have the skill for the content or not.
