Devil’s advocate here… but Elder Scrolls Online has sold XP boosts, skyshard collections, actual classes and more, for years. And it’s still pulling millions of players and by all accounts, doing spectacularly well.

There’s “boosts” and then there’s “pay to win”. Rift went down the latter path by actually selling gear, a path Blizzard’s already stepped onto with the Wow Token.

Did Elder Scrolls Online start with those?

Because putting them in after people are invested is different than having it straight from start.

If you know a game will have a stacked cash shop that people can use to bypass gameplay, you’re less likely to play.

Even some people who genuinly might enjoy New World won’t even give it a try just because of cash shop.
Cash shops in MMORPG are unpopular and if you want one in yours, you don’t put it in from start, you give it few months after people are invested.

Blizzard went in slowly, and it worked out for them. They’re still advancing it, but at slow enough pace, and carefully.

Nope. It started as a AAA price plus $15/month subscription game. It was only wheh they started reworking it to be “buy to play” that they introduced the Crown Store. It’s mostly cosmetic, but does sell boosts and actual access to classes.

Since they made that move, their player base has continually increased - it didn’t in any way turn people off the game. And having constant patches on a 3-month cycle and new expansions (they call then “Chapters”) every year just seems to show that the formula can work if the developers focus on the vast majority of the player base that do world content, rather than the relatively tiny percentage that “push” stuff.

This game will probably lose 80% to 90% of it’s initial player base within a few months. It will have even less staying power than most of those other games you listed. Only WoW will kill WoW which it is slowly doing.

Yeah, but it was after the game launched.

As I said, if people invest into and try the game, then you can squeeze in shop stuff, but if you got it from launch, people don’t even start playing.

Why would anyone playing WoW, or ESO or some mmorpg switch to New World, knowing they have a cash shop from start?
And it being Amazon, you know it’ll be heavily focused on cash shop. Also testers can tell that the game shifted into being shop focused, meaning that shop is main part of it, that they’re trying to have players use the shop as much as possible.

Not like in WoW and ESO where it’s optional.
New World got cash grab written all over it.

The point was, it actually GREW the game’s audience - by a lot. I think they have recently clocked up 18 million unique players (obviously not all at the same time!) and most of that came after they dropped the sub fee and started up the cash shop.

This will be far, far less of any sort of a big deal for New World than some commentators seem to think it will be. As long as they do it right.

But they didn’t do it right.

They flat out said “we’ll have shop and there’ll be boosts in it”, which is not only xp boosts, but profession stuff which game is supposed to be revolving around. That’s major.

Imagine WoW having half the gear craftable and shop helping you craft those items rather than go through grinds. This is something along the lines of what New World cash shop offers.

I think you’re heavily underestimating how much people dislike pay to win in MMORPGs.

ESO and WoW do not have this kind of cash shops.

ESO has had profession boosts, mount boosts, xp boosts and others since they launched the shop.

I think you’re underestimating the amount of people that don’t play MMORPGs to “win”.

ESO flat-out does. And has for years. For example (and I was going to post links, but I suspect that may not go down well at Activision!) you can level up all your professions for a price, and buy skill points via Skyshards to complete skill trees instantly… for a price.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not defending it as any kind of great design. But far from leading to the downfall of the game, the game seems to have grown exponentially since those changes, including a cash shop, started happening.

It’s not about “winning”, it’s about getting some satisfaction from your character progression, which you don’t get when there’s paid option to reach same result you’re grinding for.

I mean, you can give it a go, or keep thinking New World will succeed, but I’m expecting a flop.

Eh, I have a couple of max-level characters in ESO and I never spent a dime on the cash shop, nor did I ever feel the need to, because levelling them was fun to do.

People are making a big deal out of nothing with this one. It’s the same “buy to play” model used by both ESO and Guild Wars 2, to great success.

Well I’m glad you’re able to walk away from something you have been committed to for 15 years so easily.

The rest of us find it a little hard to part with something did we have sunk so much time into. So for me the only wow killer out there would be blizzard literally pulling the plug on the game

Just remember when wow launched it was blizzards first try at an mmo. Now I think new world will flop. Ashes of creation will do better but not kill wow.

Ehhhhh cash shop in any game is kinda sleazy tbh, no matter how careful it is
