New to tanking as a monk

Hey there, I’ve recently been getting into tanking as a BM monk, and so far I’ve really enjoyed it as I’ve started to get the hang of tanking, (I don’t get why people don’t do it more!) but I’m still new to to it and I’m sure there’s a bit I don’t know, so I’m curious to know what pointers more experienced players have such as strategy, tips, rotation, etc.
Thank you in advance!

Don’t let the dps influence you in pugs or their negativity bring you down while learning. Got to have a thick skin to tank if it ain’t guildies

Read up on peak of serenity on how to tank plenty of useful information.

But it’s an easy class to play just keep up ISB and Purify when needed

If your going to be doing M+ spec into ring of peace asap and learn how to manipulate mobs or use it as a defensive CD.

All in all just have fun! Tanking is a good role to play. Your the most needed role in the game so you get invited to everything. I rarely get denied to any dungeon below a +13. Same with raids but I rarely do that.

  • Get the Normal Stagger WA and BrewmasterTools addon (this is required for the WA to work properly)
  • Get an ISB tracker WA
  • Keep ISB active whenever you’re taking damage. 100% overall uptime is ideal to keep from wasting brews, but effective uptime is more important to start out with.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask questions! When it comes to gear, more stats > “better” stats most of the time. For everything else, there’s the forums or the Peak of Serenity Discord.

All gear is brm gear. We scale really well with every secondary except haste which is really the only one you don’t want.

Minor clarification here, but you also don’t want to pass up item level upgrades, especially not on armor, just to avoid haste. While haste is worth less overall point per point compared to other secondaries, it doesn’t typically lag so far behind that you want to avoid it entirely.

If you’re lucky enough to choose between otherwise-equal pieces of gear, you want to pick the option with the least haste, but it’s not worth avoiding. Too many people have a tendency to hear a certain stat is “bad” for a given spec and then try to pass on gear that’s still useful simply because the “bad” stat is on it. :frowning:

the only time you don’t upgrade based off ilvl is rings, where you should try and get one without haste.

Since rings don’t have armor or agility it’s better to have priority secondary stats.

I figured people would be smart enough to know this tho. Although that might be asking to much.

and traits. 15 ilvl may not be enough of an increase to forgo an important azerite trait

Stam on Armor can go from 1000 to 1350. That’s a ton more HPs.

Over 3 pieces than nothing to poo poo over.
