We need a new tanking class

Why?

But no, we don’t. We have plenty of tanks. Also, we should get a third mail armor class before a fourth cloth or plate.

We do! Get rid of some tanking class we currently have and make a fun one.. instead of having a tank class that just focuses on melee maybe something with range tanking shield and all that good stuff.
Give shamans a 4th spec like druids and make it tank. Can already use shields and one hand weapons and having access to elemental magic would make coming up with spell ideas easy.

Pet AI is way too bad for any class to use a pet as a tank in any skilled content.

I always liked the idea of a Runemaster, which was available in the RPG:

https://wow.gamepedia.com/Runemaster

We've been seeing more and more runic magic in game, like the Vrykul in Legion. It could work as a cloth tank. It's unfortunate that they incorporated runic abilities into other classes already, though :(

For a mail tank, I think Shaman just need an Earth spec. It just makes too much sense and would be awesome from a class fantasy perspective.
Yeah, it's unlikely anybody else is going to get too much in the way of "runic" fantasy now. But that would have been cool.

And shaman tanking used to be a niche thing back in BC, usually for dungeons. Back when you could get by wearing greens for specific things, and you'd be able to find random gear with dodge or other defensive secondary stats. During Cata, Rockbiter weapon (the class enchant that was Earth-themed) had a bonus to threat generation and a bonus taunt capability when you used it, so earth is the way to go. I'd totally be okay with the return of that.

Mail. Or start making shaman and hunters wear leather.

I would love a priest/paladin hybrid in mail, mace and shield. Kinda like an old school D&D cleric. Which I know to some people it will sound like just a paladin in mail. But it's not.
Well, what you just described, ironically, is old-school lower-level WoW. Paladins until level 40 wore mail, and hunters and shamans wore leather (also until 40). When they gave us the transmog library, they changed a lot of low-level mail into plate, and hunters/shamans automatically wore mail from the get-go, and warriors/paladins wore plate.

I guess the idea was that eventually, classes would "upgrade" to the heavier, more protective armor. Unfortunately, that bit of flavor is lost, and the mail/mace/shield fantasy is kinda wrapped up in the shaman class, instead of a holy-themed one. I always liked playing clerics in D&D, myself, but I think the closest we're likely to get to that fantasy is Holy Paladins.
we need a new Mail wearing class before we get another cloth/leather/plate wearer

I can't believe that I forgot about the wearing mail early on.

It is unfortunate that they blended it out over other classes, but Runic magic has been pretty established now to stem from any form of magic. They could blend it all pretty well and have them pull from many different sources. Think of the one quest for the Mage Tower, or drawing the different style runes at the Narthalas Academy.

I wouldn't want them to go the route of stripping abilities from other classes (like Demonology Warlocks had their demon form removed to give to Demon Hunters), but I think there is still room there.

We need a new tanking class, something like a sorcerer that can tank/dps and heal!!!!!

Just an ideal.. for next expansion. Yes am over BFA already... boring... I loved the demon Hunter class but like I said in the other thread I can't bring myself to main one due to being Blood elf..

Vulpera Sorcerer

Yeah Buddy!

@blizzard look into this please.

What do you guy's think about a cloth tanking class?!
I dont think the word "ideal" means what you think it means.

Warlock
Just make Enhancement Shaman into a tanking class.

Making totems a part of tanking would be extraordinary. It would be a unique mechanic, similar to Brewmaster's unique mechanics. All Enhancement Shaman would need to become a tank are a few threat-generating abilities to add to their existing kit. I feel like Enhance should have always been a tank, period. It would certainly be easier to balance than introducing an entirely new class or spec. We need another mail tank. Shaman needs a niche, other than lore. Everybody wins!

P.S. I also love the idea of a cloth tank! But I would want it to be a spellblade. A cloth-wearing melee Mage wielding a scimitar, similar to a Blue Mage.
What about an Illusionist Mage?

The idea would be to summon illusions at range that tank nearby enemies, and the Mage could kite by slowing them and relocating the illusion. This would allow a cloth tank that has a unique style of tanking!
*Cries in Dark Apotheosis*

If a cloth were to be converted it would probably be warlock.
O.o how about a dragon-themed clothy?!

Dragon Aspect Knight/Ascendant/Person!

Hybrid cloth-wearer: Tank Spec (Earth-warder from the Black Dragons), Heals (REd/Green Dragons), DPS (Blue/Bronze Flights)...?

Maybe start us heading out to the Dragon Isles to find out what the Infinite Flight are up to? Hunt down Wrathion and see what craziness he started? And it culminates in us fighting a re-incarnation of Galkarond (big evil proto-dragon guy the Dragon Aspects had to fight previously before they became Keepers?)!!!

O.o and maybe bring in a smaller two-legged-good-guy version of the Draconids??

Just my thoughts?
We reeeally need a new mail wearing class. Clothies aren't oversaturated like leather, but they're still alot of us.
I don't really see any sense to it personally, but that is just my opinion. A rogue or shaman tank spec would make much more sense.
I'd kinda like to see that actually, but they would have to expand the talent system. I would love to see something similar to RIFT's talent trees, where Rogues actually did have a tank spec, and there was a mage healing spec, the Chloromancer, which was actually a ton of fun to play.
Yes. Make it cloth. I just abandoned leather working and skinning (formerly at 150 for both) for enchanting and tailoring. Come by Lettuceprey's boutique for all your magical cloth armor needs.
Whatever it is, please make it ranged, we've had nothing but melee classes added to the game lol. Ranged tank, ranged healer, tinker, bard, whatever, just don't be throwing another melee class into the mix again lol.
What the heck is a "ranged tank" in WoW?
