Not sure ghost town servers happened in vanilla. They were still releasing realms in BC. Servers started dying in Wrath and later when they were bleeding Subs like crazy.
The vanilla pvp system, which was completely changed in BC, favors low population servers, as the ranks are given by server by faction, but there are x-realm BGs. People would flock to low-pop servers to increaase their chances to get rank 14, so the pops should balance out. Not sure the danger is as dire as you make it seem.

This is such a childish mentality. how do you think your server name is going to effect you? It wont. what will, however, is the poplation of said servers.
I donāt understand why they have to open the servers in ~4.5 hoursā¦ Why wouldnāt you guys do the release in like 3 days. I basically have ~4.5 hours to convince 30+ people to swap servers 1 week before launch. People need more than ~4.5 hours to talk with their groups and initiate a swap. If you want people to seriously consider this as an option you should give more time for convincing. No one in our group would swap that easily. Sooo many of us want to play on the same server. Otherwise you only have what I am sure is happening now, which is people deleting one char off Herod to create a backup plan character on another server. (in case people do decide F-it Iām going here) Which is just skewing the numbers.
TL;DR: Thereās no way I can convince everyone in such little time to swap therefore we will wind up just riding it out.

If they had done that, players could have migrated to their original home servers and it would have avoided this whole mess. instead they grossly underestimated how many players would be playing.

I never played classic, sometimes play retain, and I made it to level 15 (cap) in the open tests.
Again with the few hours notice. People on the west coast are still at work. Why not give at least a day to give people time to plan for this? It truly makes no sense to me.
But same can be said about character nameā¦ yet here we all areā¦
servers are gonna be full with queue just by the amount who signed up on FULL realms
Save yourself the headaches and join a medium or high server, medium has more people than you think
