And the problem is going to get worse every minute they let you level.
They know the issue exists, but there are clear issues for the longevity and stability of all released servers at play. These are and must be the absolute priority. Everyone knew week 1-2 was going to be a massive headache. Even in the worst case scenario of low anticipation, it was going to be a headache. But everyone also knows that after a couple of weeks things will slowly return to relative normality. There will be a drop off. The more servers they open up, the more potentially damaging it will be for players (with a month or two of progression being lost as they find themselves on a dead server).
And then youâll hear the calls of server transfers. At which point the forums will be filled with crying and wailing about a) all their guilds and friends being left behind; b) their name being taken; c) their faction being locked in. And these arent the people just looking in to see what the fuss is about. This will, by then, be the moderate core of classic. These people will be crucial to its ongoing longevity.
And the worst thing is, we all know its coming. Just as we all knew the first couple of weeks was going to be a mess. Blizzard needs to keep its eye on the ball and show restraint. Endlessly opening up new realms, while a nice short term fix to a very temporary issue (that will resolve itself), has longstanding ramifications that will impact the gameâs reputation and future game stability with its core audience. Imagine being one of the poor people who lost the server lottery and only found out about it in December (or if its more attrition), next august.
