New player looking for advice — RP guilds & class confusion

Hi everyone,

I’m a pretty new player to WoW, and I have to say — it’s an amazing game so far! But I’m kind of feeling stuck and was hoping to get some advice from more experienced players.

First, I’d really love to join an RP guild. I enjoy the idea of bringing a character to life and being part of a story with others, but I don’t use (and can’t access) Discord, which seems to be a big thing for most guilds. Does anyone know if there are RP guilds out there that are still active in-game without relying heavily on Discord? Or maybe some tips for how to get involved in RP when you’re just starting out and can only use the in-game tools?

Second, I’m struggling to find a class and stick with it. I really enjoy both ranged DPS and melee DPS, but what really pulls me in is whether or not I feel connected to the character I’m playing. It’s hard to explain, but the class fantasy and vibe really matter to me. I keep bouncing around trying different specs and races but nothing has fully “clicked” yet. Any advice on how to narrow it down or maybe suggestions of classes that have a strong fantasy/story that shines through in both RP and gameplay?

I know it’s a lot, but I really want to find my footing here. Any thoughts, advice, or even just encouragement would mean a lot. Thanks so much for reading!

Similar experience here as a new RPer… I’ve joined several guilds only to leave because no one would log on for days, or just one or two people, no one talking at all in-game…but the discords are active as heck. :frowning: Disappointing when you don’t want to be on discord much.

edit to add:
sorry no useful advice. just thought you might want to know you aren’t alone in feeling lost!

No worries! It’s nice to know i’m not the only one having this issue

Moonguard on both factions has different RP aspects to them. Both have guild-based roleplays, but Alliance has more of a walk-up roleplay type of feel, especially when you’re around Stormwind.

To be connected and understand more of the races that exist within WoW is to go back and read some of the lore based on those races and see what classes would fit the type of roleplay of that race.

TRP3 is an RP addon that everyone uses that creates a profile for your character. Spec doesn’t matter, especially when you’re RPing; it’s more about the transmog and the personality you create with the character to make them feel alive and RP as you wish.

For examples,

Ker’tina Silverflight is a Quel’dorei (High Elf) Ranger who has been a part of the Military for X years. She has an elitist personality because her ex-teammates were killed during the Second and Third Wars.

(High Elf/Void Elf Hunter Inspired)

Ronald Spiers is a Stormwind Human Knight who listens to his superiors and guides and cares for his men on the battlefield. He is currently retired from the Military and is now a blacksmith within Stormwind.

( Band of Brothers inspired, now Slice of Life)

Thanks! That makes sense that certain classes work best lore-wise for certain classes. I think I saw a post discussing how a void elf paladin didn’t make sense. So I understand that logic.

You’re right, it wouldn’t make sense, but Blizzard is gonna find a way to make it does somehow in the loop

buut oh well.

From my experience, Horde has literally 0 walk-up RP these days; and aside from 1 event in Durotar/Orgrimmar, I haven’t seen any RP at all on MG-H. It’s not as imperative since I’m semi-retired from RP now (running into 2 stalkers today hasn’t exactly done much to lead me back to RP), but it’s still a bit disappointing.

I’m just gonna headcanon that they’re still using void magic since we know - and I hate to smack talk the company but - Blizz isn’t going to go through the effort of adding additional art assets (ie void magic instead of holy magic) on top of the ones they already have to make.

Hunter or Rogue are good choices. Easy to RP such things as a Ranger, Thief, Spy, Woodsman, Pirate, etc. They have great transmog pieces for such roles.

That’s a tough one for sure. I know discord has become a really integral part of many guilds and sadly replaced forums in most ways. I can’t think of any guilds I know of that don’t use discord to coordinate recruitment / managing membership, mine included.

If there are guild faire and market type events that might be a good place to find guilds with an active in-game presence. If you establish a rapport with folks that may help you get recruited without needing to use discord to do it.

I second the notion that some class/race pairings have stronger synergies for roleplay. If you’re looking for something that has a lot of lore to delve into things like orc shaman, human paladins, night elf druids / demon hunters, and blood elf paladins have a lot to offer.

One thing I like doing when character brainstorming is to use the in game reputation list as inspiration. The Earthen Ring, the Cenarion Circle, even things like the Order of Embers or The Reliquary can be great inspiration for a character that goes beyond race and class.

Sometimes even finding a transmog that has a little character to it can help solidify a RP idea. Why do they use a certain weapon? What kind of story can that help you tell about them?

Wishing you the best of luck in finding a character and a group that suits you!

I will say that prior to Discord there was Enjin and Xfire forums, and Teamspeak, and Ventrilo, or custom IRC rooms, as well as other similar forums/voip programs going back into the early 2010s and 2000s. Discord’s just consolidated a few stratified features into one location from a software standpoint.

It is cool to have stuff happen ingame and for my guild for instance, our RP stuff is ingame, we do various activites ingame while using Discord for a lot of coordination and planning because it just offers things the game UI does not! There’s a few community discord servers that all are utilized for similar things because if you want your event or recruitment to get out into a wider audience, it can be a definite advantage in having a static location to inform people of goings-on.

That said, hang around Stormwind once the phasing ends(it’s currently instanced due to high traffic/events going on) during the evenings and you’ll hear Luneia and Breel doing a nightly ‘Gnews’ including various RP events going on and some other things.

During weekdays a lot of folks also work, so, it’s simply not possible for some to be on during the daytime that often. :dracthyr_nod:

As Kertina mentioned TRP3 is a definite baseline addon for roleplaying since you can write a bio and see others’ bios. Listener helps with parsing through multiple conversations during a lot of dialogue. Elephant is also handy for similar reasons.

What might ‘click’ for a character varies a lot depending on the person; it’d probably be a good idea to identify what themes/tropes you want to play the most and then see how this might manifest into a character.

A brilliant engineer who can’t use magic could of course be a Gnome, but it could also be a Tauren who just has a particular passion for the craft. You could be a rogue who’s also a skilled baker, or a warrior with a penchant for poetry.

A good repository that you can peruse through lore on that’s being updated is the Warcraft Wiki, this is third-party but most of the material is cited:
warcraft.wiki.gg/

Look.

Class confusion? Put that you are not your class in your OOC section. 99% of people will understand that your In-Game class does not clarify your character. You see a DK on the forums when I post this, right? No, he has no freaking class. He is a nurse. I roleplay a -nurse-, I don’t RP a DK. It is like with my most recent character I leveled to 80, I’m not roleplaying a Paladin, I’m roleplaying a -nurse-.
