New player having a terrible time

Hi!

I debated whether or not to post this here or on the reddit.

As you can probably tell by my achievements, I am a new player. I subscribed about a month ago. The leveling process was a breeze, and I found it relatively easy to get pretty powerful and jump into mythics. I have been using the mythic dungeon finding system to find groups, as it is proving really hard to find an active guild on my server that does PvE content (the vast majority of guilds in the guild finder are just downright dead.)

As a consequence of the above, I haven’t advanced very far. I’m not sure if it is the norm or the outlier, but the groups I am in have been… a mixed bag. When they’re good, they can be really fun. But when they are bad. They are BAD. Part of what encouragement to make this post is the fact that an Underrot +7 fell apart because the tank angrily quit because the DPS kept standing in front of those frontal attacks, and upon leaving I get some really nasty whispered attacks from 2 of the dps players.

Unfortunately, this hasn’t been a one off. I have seen it quite a lot, not always aimed at me. And it was most upsetting when it was directed at my wife, who was also new and has sworn off the game. When things get dicey now, I immediately have to wonder what people are going to say or how they are going to behave with one another, and that’s just not fun.

So, I see lots of people have a really great time. This is one of the most popular games ever, and is there any advice beyond “Join a guild!”, which has proven difficult? I have made a serious effort to try and play well. I have addons like weakauras and DBM to help me stay on top of things. I try to use my utilities like blessing of protection, sacrifice, stuns, and of course, interrupts. But it feels like even still my back is constantly against a wall.

I want to give this game a chance. When it is fun, it is really fun! But right now, I am just really not enjoying the community. I am a speech-language pathologist that works with exceptional needs children in a Title I school. I deal with enough in my working day to come home and be spoken to like this. Are there any addons that people use to help curate their experience with others or find strong groups? Tricks to find the good folks? Ways that you quickly find players to avoid?

Any constructive help and support would be very appreciated!

Leave PuG M+/PvP if you don’t want toxicity.
Find communities outside the game to find actual friends.
Make your own chill groups if you must keep PuGing.

As far as PvE guilds go, you’ll probably have better luck on a server like Stormrage or Sargeras. The guild finder doesn’t seem especially active, try in general chat.
If someone’s raging at you for a mistake you can learn from it, but of course angry whispers aren’t the most productive way of helping. The ignore list and turning off chat are both options.
All I can say is keep at it and don’t group or guild with players who treat you like that.

I dabbled in turning off the chat, but I always have this nagging feeling/thought that I am missing some important communication. So I turn it back on. I don’t know if I should be trying a different UI set up or what!

WoW is a great game to play solo (outside of group content) or with friends (inside of group content).

WoW is not the best game to play solo inside of group content.

Yeah, then I’d just add the person who is mean-whispering you to your ignore list

Huh… that makes a whole lot of sense! The original plan was to play with my wife, but she noped out pretty quick, sadly. I appreciate that pearl, if for no other reason than it gives me a bit of clarity about the situation.

Add my battle tag Marshall#1429, I’d be more than happy to play with you and do mythic plus with you.

I highly recommend looking for content outside M+. I personally think M+ is a terrible and toxic environment. PvP is pretty easy to get into and very fun. I also love RPing and doing tons of collecting.

Based on your gear, it looks like you’re playing as a healer.

That can be both a very rewarding way to play the game, or a very discouraging way to play the game. It’s more reliant on the performance of your teammates than the other 2 roles are.

Stick with it. Healing is often the funnest version of gameplay that WoW has to offer, in part because the “rotations” aren’t rigid and the experience is more varied precisely because your teammates can change so much.

I once blocked the entire server of Moon Guard because I never had a good experience with them, honestly. I run with people that are friendly and slowly add people along the way. Learn from my PUGs along the way and either add people or ignore them. You can also just join communities instead of guilds, there’s a lot of guilds that are bad apples.

Yea do you have a dps meter ? Most of hate whispers in m+ or other pre made content is usually lack of dps

I am playing as a healer! I definitely love it when things are going “right.” I am pretty comfortable with click casting and have found talents that feel comfortable for me, if not perfectly optimized.

But I do think the whole “playing solo inside of group content” and “find some non-grouped content” really hits the nail on the head. I probably just need to find some other things to do! I have dabbled with professions but I hit a wall because I ran out of artisan’s mettle

This is typical late after release. Everyone’s been doing content for a long time but you’re new and you don’t know what you’re doing.

Join a FPS long after release not knowing the maps, etc. You’ll get it there too. Nothing that you can or should do about it other than ignore it and jump back in if you’re otherwise having fun.

I do use damage meters or whatever that addon is called. I usually keep it on interrupts/cc though, because I have found that helps keep me honest on staying on top of interrupts or crowd controlling. When I see myself falling behind other players I know that I need to really hunker down and pay attention.

Simply report and ignore them if they are being rude. If they do it often they will most likely get banned.

have u tried looking at the recruitment forums here? just scroll down a bit from this general discussion link and you’ll see the guild recruitment forums.

lots of guilds there recruiting for mythic raiding, heroic raiding, casual normal raiding, mythic plus, etc.

i agree that mythic plus pugs can suck but it gets alot better if u find a guild

The dev team is just out of control. They them selves have no idea what to do. Too much content is failed. They do not know what to do and which one should they fix first.

I’m super impressed that as a new player you jumped through all those hoops and learned as much of this as you did.

I can’t imagine going to another MMO and successfully making into endgame and having a grasp of it.

No advice, just support.

Let’s game sometime.

I’ve had the same problem you have. Frankly, I’ve given up on m+ groups and really backed off and became super super casual. I really think that’s how the game is if you don’t wanna go crazy…
