New pc but not getting desired 144 fps, what’s the bottleneck?

I just finished my new pc build (I did it for fun/hobby) and put max graphics on classic, but am not getting expected 144 fps. I’m in the ballpark of 80-120. My monitor is 2k 144hz so I’m trying to hit a stable 144 fps.

Monitor - 2k 144hz gsync monitor
Cpu - i7 9700k (utilization around 10-20%)
Cooler - dark rock slim (holds 35-50C in game)
Mobo - Msi z390 gaming pro carbon
Gpu - GeForce gtx 1060 6gb (100% utilization 70C)
Ram - 16gb Corsair ddr4-3600
Ssd - intel 660p 1tb nvme (m.2)

My guess is the gpu is the bottleneck as 2k 144hz maybe be tough to run on the 1060, but it was a carryover from my previous pc. Was hoping for some consensus here from enthusiasts before I get a new gpu. Or some ways to test that my gpu is the bottleneck.

Thank you!

A 1060 isnt gonna hit those fps numbers at 2k. If you wanna test it, start turning graphic options down. Your fps should increase if its GPU. If its CPU(single thread binding), your fps won’t change.

1060 is keeping your system down see as it’s already at 100%. it can’t get anymore than 100%.

It’s your video card. I have a GTX 1080 and still can’t maintain 144fps consistently at 1440p w/ max settings. At prime time in Orgrimmar I dip to 50-60 in busy areas.

I have a GTX 1070 Ti, and can’t hit 144 FPS around a lot of players at 1440p, either. However, I run at max graphics all of the time.

I have a roughly similar setup to yours, except I have a 1080 ti. FPS is pegged at the max 144 in 1440p on max settings.

You picked an OLD video card (July 2016) for your NEW pc build and wonder why its not running as fast as it could?

8700k 1080ti rarely less than 144fps (mass aoe in raids brings it down closer to 100)

It was a carryover from my old system. My old system I upgraded from gtx 460 to the 1060.

I’ll prob start the research to get a newer graphics card for 300-400$

Honestly as others have said its your 1060. It is a good 1080p card but just isnt up for 1440p esp at higher than 60fps. If you can stretch your budget to that $400 you mentioned either a 5700xt or a 2060 Super will do 1440p 144hz just fine with your 9700k.

Stick to 1080p.

You’re not missing anything in Classic WoW at 2K or 4K.

Unless you want that Octagonal Pumpkin in Undercity to have even sharper blocky edges…
