New frost idea

I might be the only one wishing that, and It is probably far too late in the development process, but I would have loved that a branch of the frost tree could have made the frost elemental into a ice elemental for example that would be a tanking pet for frost mages like hunters and warlocks get.

Currently the three specialisations have little differences, you deal damage by staying stationnary but the magic coming out of your hand is a different color.

I think having the option to have a pet class would be great, especially for solo players ( mages are very weak when it comes to dealing with group quests solo or legion invasion elite mobs while leveling up solo compared to pet classes.

Just to be clear, I don’t think a pet class should be the only way to play frost, it should just be an option to buff your elemental a bit.

This sounds really cool!

I love the idea of a tanking Frost Elemental pet for us! That would massively improve our soloing capabilities!

Glacial Elemental
Turns your Water Elemental into a menacing Ice Elemental with empowered abilities

  • Casts Glacial Spikes at reduced effectiveness
  • has a Ray of Frost channel replacing Water Jet on a Cooldown.
  • comes with more CC options and “Deep Freeze” 3 second stun.

Maybe a choice that could actually compete with Lonely winter.

I would love to build upon the WE with different talents:

Splitting Elemental: WE holds aggro, and splits into two smaller elementals when it dies.

Massive Elemental: WE cannot move and is only summoned during Icy Veins, but it deals significantly more dmg. Waterjet now pushes enemies away.

Frozen Elemental: WE can no longer cast waterbolt, but its melee attacks slow enemies, have a chance to freeze them, and a cause Fingers of Frost.

Anyway… all wishful thinking. They are only tunning numbers at this time, and they didn’t even address ROP which was a much bigger issue. Heck, they barely communicated anything with mage, we had to take what they gave us…

You are correct, it is too late for them to make sweeping changes. In all honesty, it is probably too late for them to make changes for the next xpac since they have not given any feedback to the Beta testers on their concepts/plans for the mage class.

As for buffing the water element, there have been several other people who have suggested talents/changing the trees to buff the elemental. The problem is there is a lot of push-back from people who do not want frost mages to become another pet class.

I am of the mind that if it is done properly, having a buffed water elemental (and mirror images, similar to the torghast-style) could potentially make for a much more interesting frost mage.

For instance, instead of having:
15 x talents that modify [Ice Lance] behavior (including the ice lance talent); mostly through granting fingers of frost procs.

14 x talents that modify [Frostbolt] behavior; mostly increasing its damage or ability for frostbolt to proc other spells.

11 x talents that modify [Flurry] behavior (including the flurry talent); mostly giving additional procs.

So, it wouldn’t be too difficult to combine talents or reduce the talent points to add in more elemental (or mirror images) talents.

For the people who are absolutely dead set against frost mage having pet damage boosts (at the expense of the mage’s own damage), remember, these are just ideas to freshen up the class. There really have not been any sweeping changes to frost mages in years. Nobody is stating that frost mages need to be overhauled to become demo locks or beast master hunters. We are saying we think it would interesting to have options.

exactly. WE wouldn’t be the only way to play, but neither should lonely winter be. Options!
