New Compromise to the Flags in Midnight Silvermoon

Hi there, so for anyone not in the know, in Midnight Silvermoon, there are large, blue High Elf flags at front gates to Silvermoon and at the intersections between districts. I’m going off of all the released images of the neutral area and the Midnight Reveal Trailer.

Previously, I was thinking of adding red to the tops and bottoms of these flags to convey the idea of Blood Elves and High Elves temporarily working together.

But I’ve recently heard of an even better idea. Make the flags black, so that the flags would more so resemble the Shattered Sun tabard look, which was a neutral rep grind at the end of TBC. This way the neutral flags are akin to that neutral faction, aren’t High Elf flags that spit on Blood Elf identity, and are clearly distinct from the Horde flags in the neutral area. It’s a perfect solution!

What do any of you think?

I’m still waiting for an actual look at the banners to cast a vote. I otherwise think it would be really stupid for a city to fly colors other than those representing that city. Like, maybe switching it up at what is effectively the visitor center is fine, but yielding 2/3rd of your real estate to representing people that don’t live there is patently absurd.

I don’t think they’re high elf banners, they’re just blue. The blue crystals replacing the fel ones aren’t high elf crystals.

Blue Field and Gold Phoenix is a high elf banner. There is no getting around that.

That’s fair. Yeah, I’ll be waiting with baited breath for that beta.

I completely agree though that assuming I’m correct, it’s completely stupid to fly opposing race flags in Silvermoon. It looks to me like a stupid compromise they took because the Horde area is kill on sight. So, they wanted Alliance to have a clear demarcation between the two. But, you don’t need to make the flags blue for that (assuming I’m right).

Amen to that. There’s no getting around that.

Blue or green crystals are something they find. Blue means its a mana crystal. Green means its a fel crystal.

Flags are different. The race actually makes the flag a certain color. Blue is a High Elf flag color. There’s no getting around that.

I’ve only seen the red flags with the Horde symbol in the promotional material. So not sure where you got the idea that Thalassian High Elven flags are fluttering around Silvermoon from.

Would love to see what the Ren’dorei’s take on the Silvermoon flag would look like, however.

Don’t forget the red Anima crystals

I can share everything I’ve seen so far regarding the flags. So if you’re looking for High Elf flags, you can easily see them in the following places:

  1. Go to the Midnight Reveal trailer. First timestamp 0:31 This shows a walkway from Eversong Woods to Silvermoon City. You can see the flags albeit they’re far away. Later timestamp 1:35 you can see a closer up shot of the blue flags. And if you want an even closer shot, go to timestamp 1:38. All of these timestamps together show just how many blue High Elf flags litter the entrance to the city.

As for Blood Elf flags and Horde flags, the overwhelming majority of the flags we actually see are Blood Elf stylized with the Horde crest. This is presumably the gate to the Horde exclusive area in the city. If you zoom in you can find two Blood Elf flags at ground level. Those two Blood Elf flags are all that we can currently see right now.

I continue to suggest just making neutral area banners gray, because gray is a color most people immediately understand as being neutral.

High elves shouldn’t be using a phoenix at all. They should be using a unicorn emblem.

The phoenix is for blood elves rising from the ashes.

Yeah, I think grey or black. It honestly depends on how it looks.

Well the unicorn emblem did come into play later but the Silver Covenant unfortunately exists and incorporates the golden phoenix. The Silver Covenant is a High Elf organization.

So, sadly blue with the phoenix crest is tainted.

One artist makes something Blue that is on screent for a few seconds and everyone goes ballistic.

The horde parts of Silvermoon will have Horde flags. There will be some flag for the Alliance in the area where they are guests. My guess is it will be more “the” Alliance flag, and maybe Void Elves, (ie playable races) than “High Elves” (not a playable race, most associated with the mostly extince Quel’Lithien Lodge).

Flying Alliance Banners in the embassy area is one thing and that’s perfectly normal, but having the ‘High Elven flag’ or something recognizable as such in the city that High Elves as a movement specifically broke from and abandoned is a bit… odd. Like… that is, very literally, a rebel flag for the people of Silvermoon. I’ll have to see what it actually is though before I draw any conclusions.

… Also, I may personally start frothing at the mouth if I see any Silver Covenant anything anywhere in Silvermoon.

I agree… enough to art up some ideas actually.

Thank you for the detailed post. Please link like this in the future using << ` >> key before and after:

Seriously… “everyone goes ballistic”? Who do you think you’re fooling with that? No one is going ballistic. People are just talking about how they think this is incorrect due to the lore and that it needs to be changed. Please learn what the word “ballistic” means or if you do know, then please don’t be dishonest.

I showed the neutral flags we can see in the city. They’re a faded out blue High Elf flag with super dark tops and bottoms. There’s no Alliance flags or Void Elf flags in sight. So, why are you ignoring the High Elf flags that we do have images of and acting like there will be flags we definitely cannot see anyone?

What is the best way to bring this to attention to someone in the art team/powers that be?

It is very weird to have flags of other nations and tribes randomly in a specific city.

Believe me. I understand frothing at the mouth over this. This is a genuinely bizarre and concerning thing to do. In case you need to see the flags in question though. I’ll share the easy stuff to share.

  1. First instances of the High Elf flags are right entrance to the new Court of the Sun. Look at the bottom image.

  1. If you go to the Midnight Reveal trailer. Go to timeslot 1:38.

I’m curious to hear what you’ll think.

Fortunately, Blizzard can put a stop to it. The… the High Elf flags. To be clear…

Totally. And thank you again for the tip. I’ll edit the images I have to be clearer.

I tried using << ’ >> it didn’t work. I have no idea why not.

This is a difficult one for me because I’ve always postulated, sometimes to angry mobs, that the blood elves are the unambiguous inheritors of Quel’Thalas and the “rebirth of the soul of their nation” justifies a resurgence, in places, of its older colors. If Silvermoon weren’t hosting the Alliance at all, I’d take those teal banners as confirmation of that, building off other splashes of teal in modern blood elf designs (the Blood Knight uniform, Lor’themar Theron’s model, etc.). Silvermoon looked like this under Anasterian’s rule and the blood elves kept this crest; this is not an Alliance thing. https.://i.imgur.com/cteazjU.png

… but if “Alliance high elf” is what most people see when they look at these new banners then Blizzard has probably failed a clarity test. I’d support an inversion of these new banners to more closely align with the modern Icon of Blood, which is still sufficiently teal.

Seemed like it did in your latest post though! :grinning:

They have made a change I think. IIRC before, you could only use one tag at the beginning of the link and that was good enough. Now it seems you have to use one before and one after.
