New BM Hunter - Advice on PvE Macros plz

I’ve got a pamphlet that covers every BM Hunter macro you’ll ever need.

BT Friend me (Kaldara#11970) and I’ll get it to you one way or another (probably through my discord).

What you’ll see here are very basic macros that have been passed around for a decade.

I’ve got a master class on them complete with examples for every ability BM Hunters have.

If you prefer, you can copy this link and download it from my MediaFire account:

https://www.mediafire.com/file/yxiy27i2i2o2adt/BM_Hunter_Macro_Class.zip/file

You’ll need to unzip that somewhere convenient - it’s a PDF and a txt file (the txt file is cut-and-paste versions of the macros from the PDF).

Reach out to me in-game if you have questions.

If I may make a suggestion;

Add a ‘nodead’ to your macro.

/cast [pet] kill command; call pet 1

  • This is a simple macro that binds Call Pet and Kill Command into 1 key. If you have a pet out, it will cast Kill Command. If you don’t have a pet out, it will call your first pet. You can change the number to the desired pet in your stable.

/cast [mod:shift] dismiss pet; revive pet

  • Another simple macro. Pressing it will cast Revive/Mend Pet. Holding “shift” while pressing it and it will dismiss your current pet.

/use 13
/cast Blood Fury
/cast Aspect of the Wild
/cast [@cursor] Wild Spirits

  • Cooldown macro. Uses your top trinket, and all your CDs. You can replace Blood Fury with your racial. The macro is set up to drop Wild Spirits immediately wherever your mouse cursor is currently located. You can remove that by taking out [@cursor]. You can put /use 14 for bottom trinket instead.

/stopcasting
/petfollow
/cast feign death

  • Feign Death macro. Stops your attack, calls your pet back to you, and uses feign. You can add in /cast Play Dead at the bottom if you’ve learned the Play Dead spell and want your pet to feign with you.

/cast [@TANK NAME HERE,exists,nodead][@focus,exists,noharm][@pet] misdirection

/cast [@focus,exists,noharm][@pet] misdirection

  • Misdirection macro. Two versions. Top version will MD to your tank if you type in their name. If they’re not present, it will MD to your focus. If you have no tank/focus, it will MD to your pet. Bottom version is the same as the top version without the first part; second one is better for pugs.

/stopattack
/stopattack
/cast tranquilizing shot
/stopattack

  • This one is kinda weird. It’s useful if you want to tranq shot a CC’d target but don’t want to break the CC. Kind of advanced, kind of pointless, I use it whenever I tranq something just in case.

/petattack [pet,nodead]
/cast [pet,nodead] Claw
/cast [pet,nodead] Bite
/cast [pet,nodead] Smack

  • This last one is a generic macro that you can add into all of your damaging abilities; Barbed Shot, Cobra Shot, Multi-Shot, Kill Command, Kill Shot, etc. Blizzard’s defuault pet AI has the pet pause for about .5 seconds before casting their next Bite/Claw/Smack ability, so this makes sure your pet uses it as soon as it’s off cooldown. It’s not necessary, and it’s ~0.5% dps gain at the most. To add it, just copy and paste it to the bottom of any existing macros.

I didn’t know you could have “/use 13” and “/use 14” for your trinkets. That beats having to retype everything if you change between trinkets!

You have to learn the Play Dead spell? <Googling…> Huh… Yup: “Pet Training Manual: Play Dead”. Are there any other training manuals that are worthwhile? Or has Blizzard since made this spell mainline?

Fetch - from the same vendor.

There is also a “Fetch” one which lets you loot corpses from afar by commanding your pet to go and loot it for you. :stuck_out_tongue:

As far as I can remember those are the only two “useful” ones. There’s also a “Fireworks” one that lets you shoot fireworks from your weapon on a 10 second CD. Kind of amusing.

I’m pretty sure they’re all sold by the same NPC in the Hunter Class Hall (Legion) in Highmountain.

Oh, I’m totally getting me some fireworks! Thanks!

If you’re an Engineer and want to make it similarly easy to use your Cloak/Belt tinkers, here are the macros for those.

#showtooltip
/use 15

  • That will use your cloak.

#showtooltip
/use 6

  • That will use your belt.

Added explanation:

#showtooltip

that part isn’t necessary, it just tells the macro which ability cooldown to show. I think they added it in by default to show the first spell in the macro, but out of habit I still put it in front of all my macros.

You can even change it to show a different ability from the one you’re pressing.

#showtooltip Aspect of the Turtle
/cast cobra shot

Cobra Shot has no cooldown, so you could you could use that macro to track the cooldown of something like Aspect of the Turtle but pressing the macro will cast Cobra Shot.

I don’t use it for that very much, but if you prefer a “clean” feeling for your UI then it could be a good option.

Wow, thank you everyone. There is so much data here… I mean, I always envisioned WoW combat as pretty simple and linear as it has been evolving for 20 years… but I can now see that the skill set to truly master a spec is quite in depth… and I like that
Thx again everyone

Once I hit 60, Ill be pinging you for sure.

I grabbed the Play Dead and Fetch books from Highmountain last night. I would recommend both! Fetch in particular is a really nice quality of life spell.

Ok, need some MORE advice/help… I am looking for a way for the game to tell me like when I am off the GCD every time… so I don’t just spam keys constantly. I would like there to be more of a flow if possible. Is there something that can like send me this info? Or for example, Kill Command is something I use a lot, but the icon is at bottom of screen so I need to look down there to see if it is off cooldown after 6.6 seconds and lose my focus a lot…

Maybe I am being too lazy and that’s just part of it?

Glad my thread was able to help you bit too

That is a whole 'nother topic! Most people use Weak Auras. There are a lot of premade auras out there for various things, but I prefer to make most of my own so that I can tailor them to my playstyle. Although, I do use a couple ones I’ve downloaded from various places.

Off the top of my head, I have auras for:

  • Flayed Shot (off cooldown)
  • Kill Shot (off cooldown)
  • Kill command (off cooldown)
  • Bestial Wrath (2 seconds until off cooldown)
  • Bestial Wrath (off cooldown) [Polar Bear]
  • Barbed Shot (1 stack off cooldown)
  • Barbed Shot (2 stacks off cooldown; stacks maxed out) [Polar Bear]
  • Frenzy (3 seconds left as a heads up)
  • Frenzy (2 seconds left; next GCD needs to be BS) [Polar Bear]

The Frenzy tracker also keeps track of Thrill of the Hunt (talent) as a side effect; as they are both applied by BS and have the same duration.

This is getting a bit into a rotation discussion, but here we go…

BW, BS, Frenzy and TotH management are all closely interlinked. You want to maintain 3 stacks of Frenzy/TotH at all times, while keeping at least 1 stack of BS on cooldown; as BS is one of our top DPS spells and you always want it recharging. When BW comes off cooldown, you want to burn through all stacks of BS before you fire BW; as BW will give you two stacks of BS (talent), and two stacks is all we can bank. And then fire off another BS to start it recharging again.

With how I have my auras set up, I’ll get a BS warning when BW is about to come off cooldown, BS is capped, or when Frenzy/TotH is about to drop. The double Frenzy auras are to help my primitive monkey brain adjust. I found that with only a single aura, I couldn’t mentally shift gears fast enough to change what button I was about to push. And then it will take at a minimum 3+ GCDs to get my stacks of Frenzy/TotH back up. The audible polar bear growls help me know when I need to start firing BS as well. (If my computer is growling at me, fire BS!)

Sorry if that was a bit much to digest.

I’ve got a weak aura that shows swing timer, gcd, and current spell (if it has a cast time) as a set of nested circles/ovals that I find useful. I’ve also got a cleave timer so you know when to hit multi-shot to get the most out of it.

I don’t widely distribute these, but I can post them to my mediafire site if you want them.

Just let me know here.

holy god… Just when I think I am starting to get it, I ask another stupid question and it opens up an ALL new can of worms.

Hah, super freaking cool TBH… I just watched a 10 min video on “Weak Auras” - Amazing
I know you guys probably have the “been there done that” take on all this stuff, but I am pretty blown away by the intricacies of WoW so far.

Anyway:

That would be amazing… I have no idea how to make one yet

Weak Auras have a bit of a steep learning curve; just because they can do so much! Once you figure out how the basics work, or pull one apart to see how it was made, you can start wrapping your head around them. That being said, I’ll be the first to admit that my own skill at Weak Auras are solidly mid-tier. Some of the ones that I’ve seen on videos blow mine away. But mine do what I want them to do.

Here ya go!

“Visual Spell/Swing Timers” - https://wago.io/djut9dilW

“Hunter Timers” - https://wago.io/Ptlz8phSf

The first one is pretty universal. The second one really only works with BM Hunters.

Wow bro… thank you so much. I will get it downlaoded tomorrow and installed… (I hope its easy)

REALLY appreciate it

That’s not nearly everything - but it is your GCD, spell timer, swing timer, and some good visual timers for barbed shot and multi-shot.

Too much too fast is likely to overwhelm you. Those are the basics. You can work out from there.
