Hey guys I have been searching for a new server to move my chars to that has the names I want available and its been a really tough task. I paid a bit ago to transfter some but i was dumb and didnt know the server was a west coast one and im on east so now my ping is like 70-80 most of the time when i usually have 20.
I was hoping to get some advice from you guys on what servers are east coast i can check out to see if my names are open or not. it doesnt matter if its horde or alliance dominant but i would appreciate knowing which it is before hand! ty guys in advance for any help
There are no East Coast servers. The Data Centers are in L.A. and Chicago.
So you want to look for which ones are Chicago based if the ping is that important to you. I honestly can’t tell the difference, personally. I’m on both Chicago based and L.A. based servers and it feels the same when I run content on them.
i notice some input delay when im 80 or so ping but its not the end of the world by any means, I would just prefer it being 20 again lol yeah chicago data center is the aim for me its closest.
Yeah, Blackrock is listed as an LA datacenter realm. If you moved there from a Chicago/Central realm, 70–80 ms from the East Coast is normal. That probably isn’t your internet being bad; you’re just connecting across the country now. What server did you transfer to Blackrock from?
As to where to go, sounds like name continuity is important to you - so smaller pops with a datacenter in Chi? Or mega servers your preference?
EDIT: I see you already answered that just above.
How important is realm economy to you? Any deal breakers for a realm other than name and ping?
All I want is good ping and enough people on the realm that if I don’t by chance find a guild I can still get my gear crafted if needed. Those are my only stipulations aside obviously wanting to get the names I want.
Idc if the server is alliance or horde dominant but id like to know before hand because i wanna see trade chat.
Also to answer i used to be on stormrage but after years of not getting my names and waiting forever i tried to move.
No one knows how realms in retail works. You’ll get a variety of answers that still think they matter. You won’t see much trade chat activity unless you are on one of the megaservers.
I think you would feel more informed researching yourself vs asking randoms on here who believe we are still on physical servers etc. They have no clue what they are talking about.
Okay. Good ping and enough people, and hope to recreate your fav names.
That’s similar criteria for me. But keep in mind that realm name drives name availability but econ and guilds and stuff can be more a “connected realms” issue. So what you may want is the lowest population server (for names) in a larger cluster.
Realm
Connected-Realm Cluster Estimate
Balnazzar
Medium — about 6.7k active chars
The Underbog
Medium — about 9.9k active chars
Coilfang
Small — about 1.9k active chars
Blackwing Lair
Small — about 1.5k active chars
Detheroc
Small — about 1.5k active chars
Gul’dan
Medium — about 9.0k active chars
Dethecus
Small — about 1.5k active chars
Jaedenar
Medium — about 9.9k active chars
Ursin
Medium — about 9.0k active chars
Auchindoun
Medium — about 9.7k active chars
Note these are third-party active-character estimates, not official Blizzard population numbers. And also be aware that Blizz does not document changes to this (well if at all) so check ping as well as trade chat activity. Lastly if you have enough room on your account, consider grabbing your names where you can find them among these - and leave a level 2-5 as a (captain) placeholder.
The idea that you’re going to find a busy server with all the popular names you want to transfer your characters to at this point is not a reasonable expectation.
A server that has enough people to craft when you need it counts as a “busy server”. Even the deadest servers will have some of the popular names you want taken.
The list I gave above is the smallest realms that are also in medium clusters. I included the “small” ones because I’m not confident the numbers I have are still valid. Take a poke at them.
That’s still really playable. It’s less than a tenth of a second, on average faster than the time it takes you to blink (~100ms). If I were you, I wouldn’t bother spending more real currency or gold.
I’ve played worse (of course I also played on dialup to raid Molten Core when it was current content (so theres that) LOL
Data center location can be a big hit. But there are also other things that add up. Like don’t use wifi - cable your PC to your router (use Ethernet), also - test with no VPN, close upload-heavy apps (like talking on voice more than is absolutely necessary), reboot modem/router, compare Home vs World latency (can point to different causes), and run a traceroute or WinMTR-style test to the Blizzard endpoint when the issue is happening. Sometimes the path data takes is more important than the destination.
Not really, ping might only be a factor if you are playing with OCE or maybe Brazilian people. WoW isn’t twitchy enough for Canadian ping to have an impact on anything, it’s not an FPS lol.
