These are the things you need to very carefully weigh. For me it is more about who I play with than how far we get. Originally I was all about progression (Vanilla and TBC) but that was most likely because that was the only way to see and experience the content. Once we had varying difficulties as ways of still experiencing content I was more about finding that just fantastic personality group of people. Sure we never got cutting edge but we had always got into the Mythic (back then heroic) difficulties and usually would down 1/2 to 3/4 of the raid in said difficulty.
Back then I traded my own progression for good friends to play with. I never once regretted it even though we all no longer play anymore. I had 9 fantastic years that no amount of progression could have replaced.

Play the game for yourself to be honest, the amount of people I’ve played this game with and at one time thought were my friends just turned out to be fake friends. People suck so being selfish in the game is the way to go in my opinion, its not the real world.
