The main tank should almost always be flasked but aside from that they're optional except for hard progression fights like patchwerk. I don't understand how healers can be expected to flask given their inability to farm.
Or you can work with others in your group so that everyone gets what they need. Personally I fished up a @#$%-tonne of stonescale eels, nightfin, and so forth as my contribution to my alchy druid buddies that kept me supplied with flasks. They'd go weed-picking, I'd go fishing, and we'd all hang out in vent trading lolret and huntard stories...
I do agree with OP. Although I never made it as far in terms of raiding, I had a brother who did. He also had the same type of guild as you.
I believe they did quite a bit more of Naxx in terms of progression, but were far from the guild pushing content. In that regard he did say "we had druids in feral, and some shadow priests (he was horde), so people played a spec they enjoy."
However...he did also mention "if we are trying to push content and lack healers, we will ask the OS players to spec and help out - and they did without argument". It was basically two-fold.
I agree on one hand that people will play what they want, but I also think depending on the guild you get, you may be expected to play what the class is desired to be.
I feel a lot of players who complain about retail are also serious LFR players, and don't realize that personal loot won't be an option anymore, and being a sub-optimal player will bring out quite the animosity in 40 people. Even during the TBC days I remember that as being impactful (I raided a bit farther there).

Yeah fair enough. Admittedly I did spend most of my non-raiding time doing world PvP and bgs instead of farming for gold. What's the fun of having all the purpz if you're not stomping others with them?
You mean to tell me...
After a couple years of progression raiding, a group of 40 players, and no one was using flasks or pots?
Maybe they farmed them alone, or bought from the AH - but if you’re telling the truth I guarantee many of your members were using consumables.
