No matter how hard I try to copy what online websites are telling me to do in regards to talents and rotation, my dps flat out sucks. I’m always the last person on the dps charts . I’ve tried fire, frost, and arcane and none of them ever bump me ahead. I hear fire is supposed to be doing hot right now too. What am I doing wrong? I’ve had people who are a lower Ilevel then me do more dmg done. Anyone have any tips on how to be a better mage? Or should I just change classes.
My main character is Ravren, my level 120, Ilevel 415 mage.

Watching better players like pre, dylemma, keestus etc and seeing what they are doing in vod and logs is extremely helpful. Wowanalyzer is a great tool as well to help you break down logs to see what you are missing/doing wrong
Just a quick glance at your profile and your azerite traits aren’t phenomenal. For fire and frost both you’ll want to triple stack traits, either Flash Freeze if you’re running spike for the no ice lance build, packed ice for the orb build, or blaster master for fire.
The rotations are all fairly simple, I’d guess that isn’t your main issue. I’m by no means an expert but I’m learning now that small things can make a huge difference and that will change depending on any number of variables in your gear.
I personally found almost 6k dps by realizing I had been running incanter’s flow instead of RoP for fire. Never imagined the difference would be that much.

(For frost i know your probably have the stats you do do to trying fire but just in case) Your crit is really low. Try to get to Min 20% crit (enchant your rings) 15% haste then mastery and versa. You don’t have x3 or even x2 flash freeze yet so mastery is not your best stat. You want a balance of stats for frost anyway. Don’t forget to shatter your spikes as much as possible.
Other than that as someone else said get better traits and practice on a dummy for awhile.

Fire is better but also harder (at least it is for me) if you like frost the best i say stick with it. Unless you do mythic raiding you’ll be fine.

Since 8.2, i first raided as frost, then arcane week 2, then fire week 3. Fire was massively higher dps and easier to play. I choose to love life so i went with incanters instead of rop, and i prefer pyro over meteor.
I logged out in my arcane gear…wish i had my fire setup on.
I still prefer frost for dungeons though, and arcane is the easiest spec for world quests.
