Most memorable horror movies

This is a great movie.

It isn’t horror, but it is from John Carpenter, They Live.

It’s a great movie but it’s not classified as “horror” so maybe that’s why?

Its category is: thriller, suspense, drama

Most memorable? I think it’s been covered but this would be my list:

  • Pyscho
  • The Exorist
  • Rosemary’s Baby
  • Nightmare on Elm Street
  • Friday the 13th
  • The Shinning
  • The Evil Dead
  • Poltergeist
  • Halloween
  • An American Werewolf in London
  • Misery
  • The Ring
  • Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
  • Child’s Play
  • Pet Cemetary
  • Candyman
  • Hellraiser
  • The Thing
  • The Shinning
  • Dawn of the Dead

My favorite:

  • The Thing (1982)
  • The Exorcist
  • Alien
  • The Conjuring
  • The Grudge
  • The Ring
  • The Strangers
    (A lot of “the’s)
  • Insidious
  • It Follows
  • The Shinning
  • Gremlins

New horror people should check out for Halloween (by new I mean came out in the last 10 to 15 years):

  • The Babadook
  • Hereditary
  • The Descent
  • The Wretched
  • A Quiet Place
  • The VVitch
  • Sea Fever
  • Sputnik
  • The Cursed

I’ve read some pretty fun “debate” type articles actually arguing that Jaws is a slasher flick. I disagree, but they can make some compelling points.

As a five year old growing up back before the TV told you what was on without cross-referencing the TV Guide, Jaws: The Revenge scarred me for years when my innocent grandmother flipped to a channel and thought, “Oh look, a movie about boats on the ocean, how could this go wrong?” and then moments later a giant shark leapt up to swallow the guy standing at the front of the boat. I wouldn’t get in the bathtub without a screaming fit for days.

Jaws 3, the one with Denis Quaid, scared the crap out of me as a kid. That scene where they found Overman all rotted with no arms and legs gave me nightmares. Scared me more than the shark

Just fyi, I think Jaws is a horror movie because it did scare people out of the water for years. Probably still does. I was just pointing out it’s not listed as a horror movie.

Jaws 3 is actually hilarious as an adult, but yeah I remember watching Jaws marathons on television as a preteen on my best friend’s top bunk bed with our feet sucked up over the railing because, IDK, maybe somehow a shark could come up out of the carpet and get us.

You watch that “3D” shark come into the control room now and it’s pretty hard not to snort beer out of your nose laughing though lol.

Also yeah FTR I wasn’t arguing with you, just throwing out there the slasher-flick thing, because it’s one of those fun horror-movie-fan thought exercises.

Well, yeah, they can. Jaws and Stripe can get you from under the bed. It’s known.

Speaking of which, I need to add Gremlins to the list.

Way too many to name, but when I was a kid, I used to watch Creature Features every Saturday night. It was hosted by Bob Wilkins and would show current horror movies as well as old movies like the original Dracula with Bela Lugosi. The show also was the first time Night of the Living Dead was shown uncut on tv. Here’s the theme song.

RIP Bob

“They boy’s got the Shinning!”

“You mean the Shining?”

“SHUT UP WE’LL GET SUED!”

You get a  from me, because it was one of the best horror movies of the past 30 years. I stand by that. There was a reason it became a phenomenon at the time.

It also deserves a lot of credit for being a unique take on a pretty simple concept, using techniques others subsequently stole or borrowed heavily from, and being wildly successful on a preposterously low budget.

It also capitalized well on that old Ridley Scott quote: "The most important thing in a film of this type is not what you see, but the effect of what you think you saw”

Childs play definitely
SAW franchise
Halloween (lets forget part 3)
It follows was actually a pretty good one. Atleast for me the soundtrack was what was really great about it

I really appreciate this thread, there are a lot of really nice movies listed here. A few movies from the 70-80’s I had never heard of until now so had to write them down. Thanks!

That classification is just silly imo. A giant sea creature is killing people from the unseen depths and it’s not a horror? And thats not to mention that a thriller is when Michael Jackson starts dancing with zombies!

Nosferatu (1922). What came after that it was just silly entertainment.

I remember Creature Features, it was eventually replaced with Tales from the Crypt… do you remember the Dr Demento show on the radio Sunday nights? I know it still streams via the internet, but just isn’t as fun as when I was a kid lying in bed in the dark listening to Dr Demento on the radio.

When Jaws came out we were in California visiting family, we went to see it at a Drive Inn, next morning parents all said WHO wants to go the beach?.. I remember even being a kid and thinking… are you Fing kidding me right now?.. needless to say, to this day, though I like going to the beach in Mexico, I will NOT get in the water… lol

I wonder if you are an evil dead fan

also

is probably the greatest horror movie of all time. Horror comedy like Evil Dead and horror action like Aliens are also great, but for straight horror this was an amazing achievement with special effects that almost universally still hold up and even surpasses modern CGI. If you disagree, remember there wouldn’t be the game “among us” without this movie.

Mosquito.

It was my “gateway” horror movie when I was a kid lol

Not silly at all. When that came out my friends and I watched it together then went camping… not for very long though
