I love the newer players discver something then demand there be more of it.
So by that logic, the planet is not called earth. it’s called Rome. Don’t want to retcon histroy.
Rome is just a reskin of Greece anyway.
So I guess in this metaphor WoW is Rome and Everquest is Greece?
Nah, I’m pretty sure we call this planet Hell.
“We need a name for a settlement next to Stonard.”
“Rockard.”
I love that all the people who get off on negativity and have never paid an iota of attention to the story beyond watching the occasional cinematic are all now parroting “retcon! retcons! story sux!” like their favorite youtuber.
Like angry little parakeets.
I mean, there was at least 3-4 in Shadowlands alone.
Depends on your definition of retcon. Most people take it to mean “something new that contradicts previous lore” rather than its actual definition of “something new that recontextualizes previous lore”.
By the first definition, not really. By the second, who cares? Going back and saying “this thing that we knew about happened because of this other thing we didn’t know about at the time” is just standard storytelling. Not a big deal.
I am also interested in more manly characters … Maybe some of them could be kissing local gnomes and moving furniture for them, and fighting to the death for them a little bit…
Disagreed. Retcons are retcons, and SL was littered with them, all of which basically destroyed the lore.
sigh
okay
The funny part is we don’t even really need to lean on “but it’s a retcon!” to point out stuff like why the Jailer is poorly written. Bad writing tends to speak for itself, retcon or no.
Though this whole franchise is pretty much built on them regularly retconning stuff. Both in the “contradicting existing lore” and “recontextualizing previous lore” senses.
It’s not really ever been a big deal until people started ragging on the story as a whole.
Me move any sofa for you, Rita
It’s also flat!
Bam. Flat earthers stay winning.
Sure, I’m not saying Shadowlands was good. But acting like it’s irrevocably broken all story forever is just dumb, sorry.
Warcraft is a comic book story. Anyone who’s read them should be familiar with that by now. It’s a never-ending, serialized world with a lot of different writers who have to keep coming up with things to keep the story going, which means retcons (the actual definition) and writing for rule-of-cool rather than trying to win a Nobel prize.
Oh yeah and nobody is ever actually dead.
It didn’t break it forever for me, but boy did it leave a sour taste in my mouth. I have a hard time getting invested like I once did. Yeah, it was never Shakespeare levels of writing, but I was always entertained.
I know this is gonna forever be true but this is the part I dislike the most.
Dead people should be dead.
In that arena Warcraft has actually done better than most comic books tbh.
Only a few people have had miraculous resurrections (discounting that time we went to the land of the dead and met a bunch, because they have to stay there and not be relevant to the story).
well i mean this one was bound to happen. or wow never would have really worked.
Alliance characters are never dead.
I haven’t seen Cairne lately. Have you?
