Definitely not for the non-gamer.
I will say there was some pride taken in actually knowing how to navigate through those old dungeons. And knowing not to engage Eranikus until you killed all the green dragons otherwise…all of them come to call at once
Or how to do the Hatchery event properly without Leeroy Jenkins-ing it up in UBRS.
Scarlet Monastery was the most fun if only because it was so hard to do wrongly. We probably ran that one long after it was efficient to do so
Tbh I wish a third of the dungeons they implemented for an expansion were Megadungeons. They are so much fun.
Was pretty bummed when they nerfed ST.
I remember tanking Dire Maul. As a shadow priest. Guild run of course with an OP healer. Shadowform’s armor was pretty solid in vanilla.
We had to farm batteries or something. Good times.
Had to go into BRD a couple of years ago for something or other. It was like those horror movies where you go down a hall and enter rooms and open more doors and end up where you started. Got so terminally lost, had to hearth out.
And I used to go in there all the time in classic/TBC. From regular dungeon runs to mat collecting. My rogue had to go pickpocket stuff in there, others needed recipe drops. It wasn’t my first time…still couldn’t find my way thru.
If they introduced similar “mega dungeons” now, people would just complain that the “elitists” memorize the optimal dungeon path.
The old Sunken Temple was pretty close imo.
People complained about the dungeons back then too.
We’ll try to stay off your lawn grandpa.
I’m not going to feign ignorance and say Vanilla was more difficult… not a grind… and on and on blah blah.
But.
Vanilla Dungeons? Now those are true dungeons.
Dark, scary, hard to navigate, claustrophobic. One of main reasons I love Vanilla.
omg the THICKNESS of the rose-tinted goggles in this thread…
There’s a reason it earned the name “SUCKY temple.”
All of those places were grand and epic… the FIRST time you spent an entire freaking day slogging through them. After that, it was just a 3 hour chore. (a three hour chore… the weather started getting rough… oops )
You had fun in there, fine. You think you’re gonna have fun in there in Classic. Fine.
The only thing I’d like to bring to this discussion is the thing I find interesting: I can crawl through a random dungeon in Diablo for 3-4 hours and love every second of it. But dragging my arst through BRD for 3 hours drives me NUTS. NOTHING fun about 4 hour dungeon crawls in WoW. It just feels like work.
I miss old school RPG elements like levers, and switches, and puzzles. WoW dungeons are just a collection of 87 different mobs grouped up in groups of 4. And the only random things to figure out, are so wonky and obscure no one will LET you figure them out.
Everything in WoW is “go tab out and watch the video.” No one explores ANYTHING in this game. Before ANY raid comes out, I’ll be there isn’t A SINGLE GROUP that actually bothers to try JUST ONCE!!. Every guild has the same motd “go watch the videos for tonight’s raid.” Watch what Method did… and duplicate.
I find that pathetic.
I’m being 100% honest here when I say… one of the absolute main parts of Vanilla that i partook in and kept me subbed more than anything were the dungeons. Sure, I may be one of the few, and sure… I didn’t want to run the same dungeon back to back all day everyday, but I loved running them … again and again. BRD, ST… even Gnomer… well, wait, no not Gnomer. I take that one back.
This is GD, so I’ll ease up on Classic talk. But, you get the idea.
Sure they did, you just had to print them out!
Same with your spell lists and where to get them. Good times.
Haha do true. When good old allakhazams
DM has always had 3 wings. If you can’t figure out cardinal directions thats a you problem.
You realize we got map layouts of dire maul now right? This ain’t the age of thotbot. Wowhead covers everything, so does youtube.
First time doing Wailing Caverns in a group we got lost for a very long time.
Wow! I had totally forgotten Shadow Tanks were a thing!
I am a DPS monkey and pretty much always have been. One dungeon I did tank in Vanilla - in a Balance-Specced Druid in Bear form, at that, was Maraudon. All of it. Both wings, down the falls. We would get lost for a while. We were in there for hours.
I had forgotten as well that they had no maps.
If I still had those guildies, I’d probably do more dungeons. A friendly guild for Classic will be my top priority. No way I am going to pug those!
…i got lost in the kobold mine at lvl7 in vanilla
I think a more apt comparison would be to BRD, because at least BRD was fun.
