MMOs aren't dying, Blizzard is killing WOW

…I see

MMOS are not dying, they are already dead.

Name extreme MMORPG successes; As far as I know, I’m playing the only two that really still exist (Wow and FFXIV, oh forgot about ESO even though I have that for the XBOX ONE, lols) Before you say the other ones, remember that many were bought up by that third party company and that I don’t count that as “Everquest” anymore. Being sold off, would be the definition of NOT being a success.

Even Blizzard took one they were going to make, instead making the hugely successful Overwatch. After the success of Overwatch, do you believe they think they were Right or Wrong in doing this?

You will never see another MMORPG from Blizzard. The ones people have been chatting up won’t make it to market, or will die soon after.

This has always been the most difficult genre; Making a mediocre one is a huge undertaking.

A single light, in all this darkness!

Many games get sold off, and its still successful.

The same devs still were running Everquest when it was sold off. Pretty sure SOE was just getting rid of all of its games in general. Getting out of that market.

it sure feels that way yes.

gotta see the bigger picture though, it ain’t all negative.

competition will rise now that the giant isn’t so menacing anymore.
give it some time and we should have nice surprises, maybe not related to wow though

I keep forgetting about ESO.

it’s interesting how people freak out about people unsubbing from WoW until there’s enough content for them to enjoy it, when we’re a culture that has moved towards bingewatching shows and consuming entire series in as little time as possible.

This and use automated everything.
Then come to forum, ahh nothing to do.

I have 2 120’s and have only two of the areas done out of 6-12? Oh I don’t know nor do I care. It’s a game.

You can play this game 8 hrs a day for 5 years or more and never see it all.

Piss off Shills… Go tell your boss’s that you are fired.

I want to agree with you, but mass unsubs wont help. It happened in wod and legion and bfa have just been generic reskins of wod. Granted they have more content, but its mostly just timegated nonsense. Ion is the main problem with this game. He got his current position in mop and its gone down hill since.

you’re glowing green

MoP and Legion were amazing.

Wrong. MMOs are 100% dying. How many are left that could be considered successful? It wasn’t that long ago that the MMO market was absolutely saturated, and because of WoW’s success, only a scant few remain.

Is this some kind of tongue in cheek joke that’s going over my head?

I mean my steam library says hi and all

Fair question. Which also gets into how do we know how good or bad things really are in that vein. Have people quit? Without a doubt. Could be my experience but my friendlist which was full is now barren of wow players but that is just me however based on what a ton of other people are saying I am no alone in this.

Mind your question also has other implications like how big other MMOs are compared to it and since those games don’t go that far to share that information because even if its good it can be seen as negative to someone then we are actually kind of stuck no in this discussion no.

Mind I do think this game is losing subs rapidly I don’t know how many are being lost but I would be nothing less then completely shocked if they weren’t losing subs.

Except, of course, the evidence is overwhelmingly in favour of the MMORPG genre dying out. Outside of Asia, there isn’t a single MMORPG that isn’t in decline. Trust me, I wish this weren’t the case. But there just isn’t the interest in the genre that there once was.

Wow isn’t the only mmo and mmo’s are dying

Wow has been dying since vanilla :rofl:

Nobody here knows the actual numbers

There are activity tracking sites that have always been accurate regarding trends (lots of players playing or less of them) and those sites show an activity level as low as it was at the end of Legion.

Players reporting that their guilds and/or friend lists are dead is an indicator of falling subs.

For me, the most reliable way to gauge the population health of the game is simply the tenor of discussion on various sites. Complaints don’t mean the game is in trouble: Every expac ever had complaints. But when you start to see a certain mix of posts and chatter that shows a sad acceptance of the game being bad and also somewhat hysterical defensive talk…that isn’t good at all.

Angry “I quit” posts are better than having posts that show that lots of players have given up on expecting a fun game. And when players who say they like the game get really emotional and angry when defending it, that is usually a sign that they know, deep down, the game isn’t right.

It also isn’t great at all when lots of people are being nostalgic. Nostalgia usually hits late in an expac, when people are bored. Waxing all nostalgic about older expacs just a few months into a new one means people are NOT engaged in current content.

That’s my take. I have found these indicators to be pretty reliable over many years.

“MMO dead genre” is a meme.

Square-Enix are adding a data center in US and Europe because their sub count has exploded during their last expansion to the point it was causing real issues. The lead dev also said that their game is so successful that even if people wanted to put it on maintenance mode the company would refuse. Also, I don’t give a crap about Bethesda games but ESO seems to have soared in popularity since that Summerset.

What happened is that big budget publishers noticed they can make Fortnite, Call of Duty and Overwatch ripoffs and get a higher ROI. If you want to call the genre dead because we don’t get 5 new MMOs per year that are all complete failures like in 2012, be my guest. But given that MMOs are long-time investments, I much prefer the current situation where have a few high quality MMOs already on the market and that are made by developers who actually want to make and support them instead of just following the latest fad.

Can confirm Hells,Games like DCUO on all ports is still thriving as well is Everquest and Everquest 2. Sure, there isn’t a populace showing millions of players but the numbers are still healthy for them to be running but people seem to think if it isn’t as high as WoWs subs back in Wrath that they’re somehow “Dying” or “Dead” to the more negative Nancies who compare it to other genres or as I like to call em “The fad of the month/streamerbait”. As I’ve said before, genres in gaming don’t die some bounce back greatly, gotta remember for a while, platformers weren’t being as actively made but recently made a comeback and even then, older titles are still beloved by those who can see outside of what’s popular. Don’t get me wrong,Fortnite looks fun and all but at the same time it shouldn’t be the end all and be all definition of what can be perceived as a successful game.

Mop was amazing, but it was already planned out before Ion took the lead. Legion was good compared to wod, but compare it to any other expac and it loses. Except for maybe cata.
