MMORPGs You've Played and How You'd Rank Them

wow
eso

gw2
swtor
archeage
a game i cant remember tha name
wildstar

  1. Runescape - I always go back no matter how long that I stop playing. The quests are the best part of the game. The minigames are great too if you can find people.

  2. Wildstar - Such a shame that it was horribly mismanaged. Had so much potential. Great raiding, great dungeons, fun leveling.

  3. WoW - This ranking is based on the lifespan of the game. I loved playing in TBC and WotLK. The game has become less fun as expansions released. Shadowlands has been a dumpster fire in my opinion.

  4. Rift - The beta and launch of Rift were fantastic. The rifts and the invasions made this game immersive and engaging.

  5. FFXIV - I have to admit that I didn’t give this a fair chance as I was bored of the run to X for this quest, then run to Y to turn in the quest, then back to X to turn in that quest, next back to Y to turn in that quest, etc.

  6. ESO - I’m not a big fan of TES in general. so this game didn’t hold my attention as it was very similar to standard TES games.

  1. WoW
  2. Rift
  3. LotRO
  4. SWTOR
  5. FF14:ARR (it was unplayable on my computer of the time)
  1. WoW - It’s my day one, will probably always be top.
  2. FFXIV - Good balancing and story elements, also love the design in that game.
  3. Runescape - One of the OGs, and a fun enough game if you have the time.
  4. Destiny (not 2) - Maybe not really an mmo, but one of the best games I’ve ever played with a decent community.
  5. GW2 - I’ll cut the list off here, fun game with a good story, when I played it had hollow endgame which caused me to lose interest but it may be better now.

SWG was amazing before NGE.

  1. WoW (*excluding WoD & BfA)
  2. DAoC
  3. SWTOR
  4. GW2
  5. WAR
  6. ESO

EQ - Played at launch, and for its time, was a pretty solid game. Exp loss on death was harrowing- I remember always having to get a level “cushion”, just so I wouldn’t lose a level if I died. Still have fond memories of the community, very communicative and for the most part, helpful.

DAoC- played at launch, and was a bit confused. PvP was interesting. Never got past level 30 though.

Asherons Call- never really got far enough to get a grasp of the overall game. Think I was distracted by RL issues at the time.

WoW- What can I say that has not been said? Loved the Warcraft games, so I was interested from the start.

SWTOR- I really liked this one. Played shortly after launch. It had a few technical issues, but the individual storylines were very well done. Plus…lightsabers…

  1. City of Heroes
  2. WoW (Pre-WoD)
  3. SWG (Pre-NGE)
  4. SWTOR (Pre-KOTFE)
  5. Matrix Online (was fun but overall mediocre)
  6. FFXIV (I don’t like it, sorry. Worst new player experience of any MMO I’ve tried, as well)
  7. WoW (WoD and onwards) - absolute disgrace.

Glad to see that I’m not the only one who preferred the CU version of SWG. It fixed so many issues that I had with the game and I had a blast in the brief time it was around before SOE screwed it all up with the NGE.

For me WOW is my favorite because it’s the been the most stable and consistent of all the MMORPGs that I have played.

SWG - first MMO that I ever played and it was a buggy mess. Seriously, whomever made the decision to release the game in that state should be barred from the business. It’s sad too because when it did work I had such a blast playing my bounty hunter. I could hunt NPCs or actual players using probe droids to track them down. I also had a side business selling skins and bone to armoursmiths. It was true player made economy and I wish someone else would pick that idea up. It would have been a much more successful game had SOE not rushed it out early and then made things worse by trying to change it into a WOW clone.

Star trek online- Decent space battles and scratches that Star Trek fix, but ground missions were horrible due to clunky controls.

Warhammer online- Fun to PVP in that game, but I’m more into PVE and that game just didn’t have it.

SWTOR- Had an awesome time leveling characters and seeing all the different stories, but once you hit max level the game died. I’ve went back at different times, but it’s pretty much a ghost town at this point. With Disney choosing to use another company to make their next Knights of the Old Republic game, I’d say EA/Bioware’s days with Star Wars are numbered.

As of this writing, I’ve played WoW, ESO, Tera, GW2, and BDO. Of them, the only one I didn’t really like was ESO. I had the most fun with Tera and GW2, but neither really had anything to keep me hooked. I’m sticking with BDO for now, but since it has an emphasis on afk farming and extended grinding, I find it’s better as an on-and-off kind of game. I’m a bit interested in FF14 - mostly because I havn’t played any game from that series besides 15 - but since it’s also sub-based, I doubt I’ll actually get into it anytime soon.

If I had to personally rank them, it’d go (worst-to-best) ESO, (current) WoW, BDO, Tera, GW2.

My one gripe with it is that it feels completely designed around the console market

  1. WoW: WotLK, MoP, Legion and BC
  2. FFXIV (I only started playing in BFA)
  3. WoW: WoD
  4. SWToR (Current)
  5. NEStalgia over at BYOND
  6. WoW: SL, BFA, Cata, Classic
  7. ESO (Tried in BFA, wasn’t much better than it was at launch)
  8. SWToR - When it launched
  9. EQ2
  10. Runescape
  11. Runes of Magic

Yes, this 100% and I play Blades which is the mobile

First mmo I ever played when I was like 5 or 6 was the Sims Online. I hardly see anyone mention it nowadays but I remember it being such a cool game lol.

If I had to say my favorite though, it would be Maplestory. Just so many memories from that game and it was so unique. I think those were the days mmos were just so good even if they were grindy

Anarchy Online was my first, so it holds a special place for me. Best part of Age of Conan was looking like Frank Zappa if painted by Frank Frazetta. Took me a while to try WoW because it took most of my AO friends away and I was bitter. City of Villains was great, WildStar I had a lot of fun, then some others that didn’t make much of an impression

EQ - 3 out of 5
Retail WoW - 5 out of 5
Rift - 3 out of 5
Aion - 3 out of 5
Tera - 4 out of 5
GW2 - 5 out of 5
FFXIV - 3 out of 5
SWTOR - 3 out of 5
Archeage - 2 out of 5
Blade and Soul 4 out of 5
Black Dessert - 2 out of 5
WoW Classic - 2 out of 5
New World Beta - 4 out of 5

Listed in order of when I first played them (regardless of current status):
(mostly just included this to help me gather my thoughts)

  • Runescape
  • WoW (friend’s account, then my own for 4 months, not in earnest yet)
  • Runes of Magic
  • Knight Online
  • Planeshift 3D
  • Perfect World International
  • Shaiya
  • WoW (round 2, my own account, for realsies, long term)
  • Guild Wars 2
  • FFXIV
  • Wildstar
  • Black Desert Online

Basically, short version, I played Runescape, got a taste of WoW, played a bunch of free MMOs between then and the time I could pay for my own WoW account, then eventually tried some newer MMOs a couple years after settling into WoW, but not with intent to replace to WoW.

Anyway, based on enjoyment at the time, and not an objective look back…

S Tier:
World of Warcraft - Most time spent, 2nd “feeling of wonder”.
Runescape - Most nostalgia, 1st “feeling of wonder”.

A Tier:
Wildstar - All around solid game, would have played more if I had time, sad it’s gone.
FFXIV - Fallback if I’m a bit bored of WoW, nice story/class design, just can’t fill WoW’s shoes entirely.

B Tier:
Black Desert Online - Fantastic combat & non-combat skills/minigames, but very PvP-oriented and P2W.
Guild Wars 2 - Really good story game, interesting combat & class design, but lackluster “endgame”.

C Tier:
Knight Online - So-so F2P MMO from the same era as Vanilla WoW. PvP-oriented, grindy, but good memories. I learned some Turkish. Very “last-gen”, gets updates, but not overhauls.

Elder Scrolls Online - Larger title, clearly some amount of polish, large world/story, but just doesn’t hook me for some reason.

D Tier:
Perfect World International - Generic F2P MMO, didn’t spend much time with it.
Shaiya - Generic F2P MMO, didn’t spend much time with it.
Runes of Magic - Generic F2P MMO, didn’t spend much time with it. VERY WoW-cloney.

F Tier:
Planeshift 3D - Generic F2P MMO, didn’t spend much time with it, but felt notably less polished than D Tier.

To be clear, I enjoyed all of them at least a little bit. “F Tier” is just in comparison to the others, it doesn’t mean I hated it and threw it away immediately.

1.) Everquest Through Pop and Lost Dungeons of Norrath.
This game will always be the best time playing a video game that I have ever played. The community was amazing. The world was vast and full of danger and adventure. Grouping and community was required. The main reason the game was so amazing, was because the game was driven by the players and it was a brand new genre of gaming. I had a binder of printed out zone maps, with hand written notes on them, about certain spots. There were only a couple websites that were resources. Alakazam was my go to. The economy was players selling their wares in Eastern Commonlands Bazaar tunnel by /ooc chat them. I can go on and on. It was the best.

2.) World of Warcraft: Its still the most polished MMO. It has great gameplay and is still fun to play. It has its ups and downs, good and bad. But it is still an amazing game.

3.) Dark Age of Camelot: So many diverse classes. Realm vs Realm vs Realm PvP was the most active I have every been in PvP. The PvE content left a bit to be desired, but the PvP in that game was fantastic.

3.5) Anarchy Online: I almost forgot this one. It was a buggy mess at the start, but it was a large/vast/unique experience. I really had a great year playing this game.

4.) Ultima Online. The grandaddy. Constantly scared of Playerkiller groups roaming the wilds. The first MMO. Housing and community. It was a new experience.

5.) Star Wars TOR: Best single player storytelling for the classes. Grouping was meh, but I played it for a while and enjoyed it.

wow and swtor were the only ones worth playing. None of the others even gets an honorable mention from me.

  1. RS3 before microtransactions destroyed the game
  2. WoW
  3. OSRS
  4. ESO (Not having Oceania servers and having to play a quarter of a second delayed as a result killed this for me)
  5. RS3 currently

Admittedly I haven’t really played many MMORPG’s so my list has no variety
