Melee Design

I’m curious to see which melee specs you guys find are “modernized” and which are behind the times.

DKs are complaining of not being modernized but if one were to reroll to a modern melee spec which ones are designed well?

I personally find fury too be fluid and fast, it’s like a nice car. Are there any other melee that feel good?

Playing Enh Shaman feels like driving a Group B rally car.

Chaotic and really fast. You’re also squishy though, outside of your Astral Shift, so try not to crash. It’s a fun mess to play, and it performs decently well.

What does this mean?

Honestly that’s something I’m unclear on myself. It’s a common complaint which hopefully someone can clear up. My guess is they are stuck with a rune system that feels outdated, and unholy wound juggling is not fun more tedious. I tried breath of sindragosa but found spamming howling blast and obliterate to generate runic power to funnel into a cool down to be lackluster. I’m not sure where blood is standing on this because I never picked it up

I think BDK is by far the most fun DK spec

If you mean “not clunky” then I agree with fury, and would add ret pally, dev evoker if you count mid ranged as melee, would advise against feral and rogues though I didn’t find sub to be clunky (just many say it is)

I also think prot warrior is really fun and not clunky but idk if you count tanks

Thanks for the response. I use Blood primarily on my DK’s and find it fun. As far as Frost DK goes, I didn’t like how it played. Its range seemed small like the feral Druid.
I wish they would expand the range on both of them juuuuust a lot. They would feel more fluid to me if so. Don’t know if it would ruin the feel for others though.

Every Melee who thinks they’re “behind the times” hasn’t played a single Rogue spec.

Every Rogue spec is button bloated to smithereens, and is flat out miserable to play.

I think Blood is super fun. I’d probably say it’s the most fun tank spec, mechanically speaking.

I like guardian druid.

Beam, mangle, thrash, spam moonfire.

i feel that feral druid is modern and well designed.

have you tried it before?

Outlaw Rogue and both Warrior dps specs have been left in the past.
If you’re counting tanks, Brewmaster monk as well.

Favs: DK Unholy & Blood, Warrior Fury

Favs but feel need work: Monk Brewmaster, Rogue Assassin & Subtlety (don’t play Outlaw, cant comment).

Enjoy: Druid Guardian, Paladin Protection, Warrior Arms & Protection

Find boring/uninteresting/not my style: Demon Hunters, DK Frost, Paladin Retribution, Druid Cat, Monk Windwalker (it’s fine? But feel its really missing something, my least disliked)

No opinion: Shaman Enhancement, Rogue Outlaw, Hunter Survival

Means they want a spec redesign like Ret Paladins without actually saying they want a redesign

Rogue is definitely a thing of the past, Warrior is kind of inbetween.

DK is just clunky, more sided towards to the “old” type of spec I’d say.

DH, Monk and Shaman are what I would consider “modern” specs.

Feral and Survi don’t exist and I hate the pink class so I won’t mention its name.

I always feel like playing arms warrior is like driving a stick or manual transmission. Or like that game where the entire point is to control each limb manually to walk forward, whereas everyone just walks like normal.

But I also know people who have played arms forever and they love it that way and that they have control.

I like how this doesn’t even begin to explain the issues you have with the spec.

This whole thread is full of statements like this that don’t clearly define what they do or don’t like about a specs gameplay loop.

For classes/specs that feel updated and in good condition… (car analogy?) Can only speak to my experience:

Minimal jank, smooth rotation, doesn’t feel dated:
DK (blood), Pally, DH, Warr (Fury/Prot) , Enhance Sham (only because of recent updates)

Some Jank, ok rotation, slightly dated:
Warr (Arms), DK (Frost, Unholy), Monk (WW)

Wild Jank
Brewmaster (imo keg toss/fire breath is awful), Rogue (all over the place)

No experience
Druid, Hunter (Survival)

Celestial Monk feels jank. All those buttons to press.

Shadow Pan Monk is fun. Perfect even.

Arms Warrior felt jank in the beginning but now I appreciate it.

Rogue… DF Outlaw was jank in a way but crazy fun. TWW Outlaw feels wrong.

Feral Druid is jank with all the upkeep it has. So much work for such little pay off.

All of the DK builds feel jank. Blood has all these weird off-hand cooldowns. Unholy is fine but feels tedious. Frost is a slog of waiting on GCD’s with way too much smash the glowy button.

Ret Paladin is kind of fine? It has jank similar to Frost DK. There’s these weird delays while the server interprets all the procs. Your GCD goes from 1.5 to 1.6 to 1.4 randomly.

They all play the same. Just different abilities. There’s nothing more modern on a warrior and less modern than a dk. Enhance is the clunkiest melee spec by far tho.

Ret has had the same basic design since Cataclysm, but our cooldowns have changed between expansions.
